Wait Time For Providence, RI

I also signed mine today, final out June 16th/17th and my retirement date is October 29th. One thing I didn't know, I thought you had 30 days to outprocess from when you get your orders. At least at my base it's 30 days from when you sign for your ratings. I might not even have orders for another 2 weeks.
Congrats! Hopefully I join you both soon. I'm good with the 30 days thing. I would be good with less to be honest. Not on a base so all I need is a date and an afternoon...

Well...just got the call. Findings are in, confirmed 20% DOD, 100% VA. Can't do the phone counseling until Thursday. Plan is to call, see, sign, and send back. Lawyer will be looking at them today or tomorrow. I wish I could be there in person to do it, but I guess you do what you have to do.

Congratulations, now everything gets super fast. After waiting for 3/4 of a year I feel as if I don't have enough time to get everything done.

Man i told ya!! haha we are on the same pipeline...now lets see how these orders pan out...We both have separation dates so hopefully they won't set them too much further than what we requested. As of May 19th, i requested JUNE 30th as my last day.

Man I hope you aren't Navy. I requested May 29th for my retirement. That was on April 7th. I thought I gave them and myself enough time. My orders came in for JULY 29. If you're Navy, you're looking at August based on what's happening up here.

They may in fact be true. But you also have a retirement vs a separation. I can separate any day whereas a retirement must be done at the end of the month.

Well just got my findings emailed to me from my PEBLO since I am doing the phone counseling on Thursday to give me time to review and talk with the lawyer now to decide.

Still confused on the combat zone vs. combat related designation and how it applies to the VA recouping the % of unfitting conditions. As well as when it is 100% without the unfitting conditions...Also whether or not DFAS will yank out the taxes off the top of the severance....can anybody clarify?

You are correct! You called the any day thing with our timelines being so close...I will sign on Thursday and will be requesting 30 June as well as an EAS. I actually just want to get this going and I am selling my leave back. So I will just take the PTAD and hopefully done going to work where my last day would be like 10 June...Anyone think this is possible?

I happenend to get in contact with a rep via email at DFAS and he says they originally "have" to take the taxes out, but if you want your tax money back you just have to mail them the correct documents once your dd214 is ready in the same tax year to get them from dfas. If it's after Dec 31st, you will be dealing IRS to get your money back. The ST. Clair decision letter is from you to them so DFAS has something to show IRS on why they gave you your tax money back. It's all based on FINAL RATINGS.

Thanks! I appreciate it. Now that you mention it, I do remember some of that stuff from the DTAP brief.

Anyone know what it means in terms of the severance tax if it say (czone) next to the unfitting condition?

I know the VA will not recoup, but will it still be taxed? Or do I just go ahead and prep to file with DFAS to get it back?

Yes that's true. I forget it's way quicker if you get separated. I guess it's worth working the extra month and being stuck here for retirement.

I would take the extra month...for that. Well worth it there.

No chance tro fight it for the 30? your 100% VA, you have to have something to fight for, retirement is soooo much better than severance. and the board/return is quick useally within 30 days

It's not looking like it. I could try, but there is no slam dunk either way for it. Not sure if I have/can get the documentation to flip it.

Yours is combat related anyway so they aren't getting taxes..I'm in the same boat..from the way everything panned out there is no clear dunk to 30% for me either.. Just do what "YOU" know is best for YOU.
i look at it like this..and this is just MY opinion..

Retirement: insurance, blue id and privileges that come along with it. (still continue to pay bills with your va paycheck)
Possibly have to start working immediately to keep money coming in depending on your final VA Percentage.

Severance (tax free): pay off every bill you have and start a new life debt free. yeah they recoup a small portion of it so it's an interest free loan on both sides. you won't gain any interest and they won't take any. You might not have "free insurance for family, BUT you don't have bills.

ALL DEPENDING ON YOUR SITUATION IT COULD BE A FAIR SHAKE ON BOTH SIDES.

Definitely listen to all moderators on this site so you know ALL OPTIONS to fit YOUR situation.

You hit the nail on the head! I am definitely listening to all advice from everyone n here.

I am looking at both sides though with the debt free and working for insurance and whatnot, but it's definitely nerve racking. Going to talk with my wife this morning to try and has out the plan/route we are going to take before my appt to sign at noon.

Time to buckle down and decide a plan and go with it. Also with 100%, the sooner you can make it P&T, then you qualify for CHAMPVA and the VFW stipend to cover the extra on medical for the family...

I just checked mine after reading this and it is saying the same exact thing. I just signed my findings Thursday and sent the copy of the signed findings to the VBA MSC that same day. Not sure if that has anything to do with it but...I guess we will see. Same boat brother, you hear anything let me know.

Just off the phone with HQ Marine Corps and spoke to the seps/retirement branch. Requested an EAS with them for June 29th so I can get the ball rolling. Said he should be able to help me out since I'm going to be selling back my leave anyways...I guess I will know soon/when he emails me back on the status.
