VA caregiver program

We applied for Caregiver support in May and was denied. I am rated 90% disabled VA with IU, 80% P&T retirement Army. I have severe ptsd, TBI, degenerative Arthritis in my knees, back, and ankles, all combat related and was denied. We mailed in an appeal as soon as we got the denial letter at the end of June and have not heard 1 word from the caregiver team. We even faxed in the appeal after a month of not hearing anything. We have called and left messages but no one has returned our call. Just so you understand to, the caregiver nurse took 3 weeks to confirm that they even got the initial application after faxing it in, swore that she had called and spoken directly to me and I have my phone records to show she never called. Finally after 4 weeks one of the assistance called and gathered information about what my wife does for me on a daily bases. She makes sure I have my medicine to take, makes sure I take it because I forget quite easily, she has to drive everywhere, cook, clean, yard work, I have major panic attacks and anxiety attacks. I rarely leave the house because of my issues.

We are in Ga, zip code 31801... I sent the application and appeal to the Tuskegee VA hospital in Alabama.

Any help with what we need to do?

Welcome to the PEB Forum! :)

Wow, I am indeed saddened to hear this type of information for sure! :(

Hmm, what was the basis for the denial of VA Caregiver support as stated in the denial letter from the DoVA?

Moreover, on a side note, have you applied for or are you currently receiving SSA SSDI federal disability compensation as a Wounded Warrior at this point in time also?

That said and if not, then please review my URL at http://www.pebforum.com/site/threads/social-security-administration-ssa-social-security-disability-insurance-ssdi-compensation.24005/ for detailed information.

Thus, I quite often comment that "possessing well-informed knowledge is truly a powerful equalizer."

All the denial letter said was that I did not qualify for the caregiver program gave no other reasons than that and that I had to submit a written statement to appeal the decision and mail it in. I mailed and faxed it in, still nothing... called them again yesterday but only went to voicemail but left another message.. I am currently appealing a denial for SSDI, I was denied the first time as well.

Hmm, it seems that some injustices are potentially occurring at least with the VA Caregiver Support program in reference to the denial letter. Moreover, I would strongly suggest that you contact the Director of the VAMC and explain your current VA Caregiver Support situation for any potential additional assistance.

Wow; denial for SSA SSDI also! Okay, please remain positively proactive and pursue all legal opportunities for potential positive adjudication at this point. Indeed, you should be victorious at the end of the day in my opinion! Take care!

Thanks, my wife is doing that today. We definitely arent giving up, just another battle to fight. We havent gotten a lawyer yet but that is the next step if my appeal is denied.

Indeed, you both are quite welcome! :)

As such, never default acceptance to injustices while continuing the fight for your well-earned/well-deserved federal and military disability compensation! ;) Take care and enjoy life!

I'd highly advise getting a lawyer for SSDI, it's to the point now where you have to have one. I got denied while I'm and as soon as I had ratings in hand refiled with an attorney and blam there it was!

From my recent experiences with the DoVA Caregiver Support Program as a military veteran, the answer is "no" albeit you would need to submit a copy of your DoVA "Disability Evaluation System Proposed Rating" documentation along with the VA Caregiver Support application. Take care and enjoy life!

For all the folks who can't get the Scaadl calculator to work. I had success with using Firefox on my husband's tablet.

Well, I also applied as caregiver for my husband. Wednesday is his visit with his VA doc to fill out some form??? Should I put down any notes beforehand? What does the doc want to know? He only met her one time and isn't exactly happy with her.(she tried to give him yoga exercises which he can't do) Since his last visit with her he got a TENS unit and it is now necessary that I aid him with some bathroom issues. What's after this appointment , the nurse visit or the training? Who determines the tier level? I manage all finances, go to all appointments with him, I make the appointments, order meds, supervise that he takes them, cook, make sure he showers, take care of his feet(diabetic) , help getting him dressed, clean and maintain his CPAP, help him with his TENS... in addition we also have two learning disabled kids and our oldest is just like him bipolar. So no way I can work. I don't even like leaving the youngest with him alone. Yesterday he told her she could go outside wearing only her bathing suit.(it was in the 50s!!!)
