If your first day in a retired status was 1 December, then the earliest you would accrue VA compensation would be for 1-31 January which would be paid on/about 1 February 2019.

The "Month Following Law"

Ref: https://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/text/38/5111

"... payment of monetary benefits based on an award or an increased award of compensation, dependency and indemnity compensation, or pension may not be made to an individual for any period before the first day of the calendar month following the month in which the award or increased award became effective as provided under section 5110 of this title or such other provision of law."

Does anyone know how long it has taken to receive your withheld VA pay after retiring? I had two months of pay withheld by the VA until DFAS completes some sort of audit showing them I am eligible for CRDP.

1. Concurrent Retirement and Disability Pay (CRDP) allows military retirees to receive both military retired pay and Veterans Affairs (VA) compensation.
--DFAS CRDP is a pay item shown on the DFAS RAS on page two. It allows the payment (for those eligible) to receive the longevity portion of their retired pay if the retiree is rated 50% or more. CRDP is actually retired pay (restored via CRDP)

2. VA CRDP is withheld VA compensation pending an audit by DFAS (or USCG for those personnel). The audits by DFAS are forwarded to the VA only once a month and that is around the 5th. Most of the CRDP audits resulting in back pay from the VA that I have seen were for regular retirees who filed VA claims long after they retired from the service. The unofficial timeline for payment of retro VA comp was 1-3 months AFTER the VA received the audit from DFAS (keep in mind the once a months transmittal of audits). There was no precise timeline or requirement of which I am aware.

3. I waited for three payments of VA CRDP that involved
--30 months
--24 months
--12 months
several years ago; the processing is much faster now.

Good luck,
Ron

You won’t get pay for Jan, probably will get pay by March 1st for February

Casualguy34,

You are due active duty pay for 1-30 (not 1-31 January) and that would not be generated in the same fashion as your previous regular payments.

Back in my day, that payment was in cash or check by the local military finance office on date of separation. Obviously, DFAS processes those payments now. Since you are going to receive severance pay, there will be no further payments (such as for February, mentioned in preceding post) from DFAS, except for 1-30 January and the severance pay.

I have not kept up with the timelines for those payments. I would think within one week after separation. However, I just saw the following comment from a previous year: “I ETS'ed on 29 April, I received my severance and final pay check today 26 May.”

VA compensation, if applicable, is a different matter. With a separation date of 30 January, the first period for which VA comp could accrue is 1-28 February with a potential payment date of 1 March, if made in real time. Often they are retroactive payments.

Thx Ron.
I should see last pay and severance on same day according to discharging finance office personnel. VA pay “should” happen 1march.

If you received any type of severance pay you will have to pay that back before the va will pay out anything.

Thanks. I didn’t receive any severance pay so hopefully sometime this month.

Good. I got out in 2005 and they went back and medically retired me so i just went thru the audit process with dfas and the va it took them bout 4 months they just finished it up yesterday. Sometimes it takes a while.

It’s been 3 months for me so far. I contacted DFAS and was told they have to send something to the VA to verify whatever. They do that once a month I believe.

The DFAS transmits audit results to the VA around the 5th of each month.

Thanks Ron. Hopefully this will be the month. DFAS said they received the VA inquiry early January.

They never even talked to me about my severance package, it just says im entitled to it on my orders, I have no idea if im actually getting it or not.

Question my final pay check seems to be like a month and half of pay is this due to you being paid for the month after you work it.
