AFROTC, Prior Service, DD214 RE code 1, Medical red flags

Hi,

So the purpose of me writing here is to see if there is any actual point in me putting in an application for AFROTC. I have an appointment for my physical to attach to my application this coming week.

I'm an Army Veteran, I'm out of my IRR time frame, and I'm currently attending a university that has an AFROTC program. I have a VA disability and some stuff in my medical records that I fear will be disqualifying. I'm 28 and have had postpartum depression twice now with each of my children, which is in my record. I had a torn hip labrum (no hip dislocations of any sort) in the Army and I ended up getting a P3 a month before I ETS'd which did approx. nothing for me as I never had a med board of any sort start. I was married to another service member at the time and got my hip fixed at the same hospital under his tricare since the surgery was already scheduled before I ETS'd. Since the surgery in 2016 I am able to run and jump and have a very good range of motion in my hip.
On my DD214 I have an RE code of 1. I've had no other medical problems since. I haven't been on antidepressants in a while (my youngest born in 2019 and I subsequently had postpartum depression which has since resolved). I have a very high GPA, I'm very motivated, and I have no criminal background (not even traffic violations). Getting out of the military is one of my biggest regrets.

It would be a literal dream come true if I were able to commission in the Air Force. I'm currently pursuing my Bachelors in Nursing.
I also am very afraid of being rejected all together and if I am rejected, I'm also afraid of possibly losing my VA compensation for attempting to commission, which wouldn't be a problem if I did commission.

I know that any red flags in your medical will be sent to DoDMERB for evaluation.

Hello @Kaye ,

You did not mention the type disabilities you have that warranted receipt of VA compensation. That is private info of course, but one of the requirements for AFROTC is
  • Pass AFROTC Physical Fitness Test.
One of the moderators of this board, @chaplaincharlie , had a long career in the USAF and might have some comments about your chances.

What is your VA disability rating and what is it for?

The VA disability was for the post partum depression and the hip thing. I’d absolutely be able to pass the PT Test

Postpartum depression is driven by hormonal changes. While the depression is real, it’s etiology is tied to pregnancy. Is another child in your future? If not, you could make a case for fitness.

I know two Veterans that were denied medically for the Air Force because of prior injuries one commission and the other enlisted both were able to get into the Army though just keep that in mind if that is something you are willing to do. The Air Force rejects applications at the highest levels so you can get pretty far along in the process just to get shot down at the end.
