Just diagnosed, about to start the MEB process. Was wondering if there are any recent/current people of the Air Force that have any advice. I'm also wondering what the MEB has been offering. I have been in 12 years and I am an E7 with a good background. Thanks.

any info will help. It looks like every base does this differently from the past forums, and there is no recent information that I can find anywhere other than the 20%-40%.

Yes every base does it different , which I would say it all depends on the Dr who does your physical, and how she writes you evaluation report that's gets submitted to the DOD/VA

Hmm. I read on one of the forums that a flyer got 60% with not many years of service. And other forums talk about how some people get 20% with 13-14 years. It seams like a big gap.

Fight it off to stay in and get retirement if this is the only reason you would be MEB for.

Just got contacted they are processing the MEB, will be going in for initial meeting with PEBLO next week. I will keep everyone informed.

I was diagnosed with non-insulin dependency diabetes in May 2015. Went through the MEB and was found fit for duty. All good things must come to an end though. I became insulin dependent within a year. I managed to hide it from the military until my RILO. I have Congressional help trying to keep me in (doubt it works) but had a nice meeting with the base commander about a Senator calling him haha. I am literally driving home from my VA appointments right now. I'm a little further on the process than you and would love to give you a ton of light on the situation if you'd like. Just let me know

Just was wondering if you guys had any updates on your situations. I just got diagnosed with type 1 Friday after going to the hospital. Any info is greatly appreciated

So you will get med boarded for type 1 within 90 days of diagnoses per air force regulation. Do not get type 1 mixed up with type 2 in anyway during this process, it is two totally different beast. Type 2s can generally stay in with a good a1c, type 1 is generally not the case. My advice, make sure everything is documented. Get referred to a specialist off base, go to an actual type 1 diabetes education class by a diabetic educator and not the disease manager on base. They will actually tell you how to do correction shots, ratio to carbs, not just hey take this before each meal and before you go to bed. What has helped me to accept this is becoming familiar with the new lifestyle, it will take a while to accept it, but it will happen with support and knowledge. The air force will take care of you. Make sure you get on a waiver if you are having lows while exercising. This disease is no joke, and will knock you down within a second. I just got done with my VA appointments this last week. If you have any questions feel free to direct message me.

FYI, I was at a 700 glucose when diagnosed with a a1c that couldn't be read. Now I have a 90-130 glucose levelevels and have dropped from a 9 to a 6.9. Not the greatest but it is getting controlled.

This is for the VA. I am talking about the military rating where if you don't get a 30% or above, they do not retire you, you are discharged

DoD gets their ratings from the VA. So if the Air Force finds you unfit for diabetes, they will send your packet to the VA for ratings. So that link I showed you will give you an idea of what percentage you are looking at.

I'm shooting for that 60% and feel I should get it; what kind of benefits could I expect from the military/VA?

Military is iffy. For the VA, read the link mrando attached. I am going to post everything I learn about this after the process. This way people that are blind sided by an illness don't feel like they are blind sided about the process for type 1 diabetes. T

The VA does a separate evaluation and writes up their findings. So the VA can be opposite of the military branch involved depending on the case.

Ladydb..if you go through the IDES (integrated defense evaluation system) the military goes off the VA and the VA goes off the CFR. That's the law. However the military doesn't rate everything the VA does..just the medboard condition

I am still waiting on the VA to respond. PEBLO sent packet to AFPC last month, and I am sure it is now with the VA awaiting ratings. Just our of curiosity, how long does it generally take for the offer after the email from mypers is received? Is anyone else in the thread getting closer?
