So you will get med boarded for type 1 within 90 days of diagnoses per air force regulation. Do not get type 1 mixed up with type 2 in anyway during this process, it is two totally different beast. Type 2s can generally stay in with a good a1c, type 1 is generally not the case. My advice, make sure everything is documented. Get referred to a specialist off base, go to an actual type 1 diabetes education class by a diabetic educator and not the disease manager on base. They will actually tell you how to do correction shots, ratio to carbs, not just hey take this before each meal and before you go to bed. What has helped me to accept this is becoming familiar with the new lifestyle, it will take a while to accept it, but it will happen with support and knowledge. The air force will take care of you. Make sure you get on a waiver if you are having lows while exercising. This disease is no joke, and will knock you down within a second. I just got done with my VA appointments this last week.
