I just reached my 15 year mark in the Air National Guard. I had been on a 422 with a waiver for WWD.(civilian back injury) This renewal was the first renewal of the waiver at the Guard Bureau level. Despite an impact statement in my favor and medical statement that I am able to perform my primary Medical Technican duties on a drill weekend. The MEB result of Disqualified for worldwide duty sent foward the recommendation that I be discharged from the USAF/ANG. Realistically my back injury does prevents me from performing field medic duties but I have read of the ALC- C duty limiting code that can be assigned. I have also read that through the PEB process a member can only be found fit or unfit. After reading some of these posts I am more confused because it seems if you appeal through the Disability Eval. System you could loose out even more. So my apologies for the long intro. Anyone who can offer input on wether or not I should fight to stay in for 5 more years to make 20 or just take the 15 year medical reserve retirement and deal with it. I have minimal active duty time regular training and short tours only. Thanks in advance any input at all would be great.

What you would qualify for with 15 years guard/reserve is retirement at age 60 based on your total points. You will get nothing, including medical benefits until age 60. If you make it to 20 years in the guard, you still qualify for reserve retirement at age 60 but you would have more points and therefore a higher retirement payout. It sounds they are doing a WWDME only and your choices are to agree that you are not fit for service and retire at age 60, or appeal the decision at a PEB, which you must pay your way to Texas for, and hope to stay in, or ask for transfer to a less physically demanding position. If your condition was incurred/aggravated by military service , get a LOD and request MEB/PEB through the Active duty disability evaluation sysstem.You can and should apply for veterans benefits but must show service connection between your condition and military service.
Thanks for responding. I was injured civillian side back injury in the fire service so LOD that way. My condition was never aggravated by military service and I cannot provide documentation it has improved for the PEB because it has not. I don't think I can show a service connection for VA benefits. In the long run I was hoped that my waiver would be granted and just keep working my drills and extra days to help with pre and post deployments In my Med Group as I had been doing. Home station we do not have a physical demand placed upon us it is pushing through the records for the most part. After reading some posts, one of my concerns now is if I appeal and the time line gets stretched out, my enlistment is up in a year, then I would end up with nothing since I probably could not reenlist in this status.
