I am confused about Vocational Rehab. Does Vocational Rehab subtract from my Post 9-11 Gi Bill months?
Can anyone tell me where I can look to find out if my kids get any college for free if the VA only finds me 70-90% disabled?
I have the entire Post 9-11 Gi Bill left (I was hoping to save it for my kids)…If I use 9 Months of Vocational Rehab do I lose 9 Months of my Post 9-11 Gi Bill?
This is a sticking point for me, because if I do lose months on my Gi Bill I think I need to find another way. My ratings are not back and I don’t think I will be more than 90% the first go round if that and I have a soon to be 16 year old and from what I have learned from this forum. If I am rated less than what I believe is fair it might take a lot of time to fight and to fix. I want my kids to go to college but I sure as hell can’t afford it. But I have earned my Gi Bill and I want to maximize everything possible so my kids have a chance to get a degree without school loans.
I am broken physically but I have an MBA, (Desk work, which is challenging with some of my ailments, & I can no longer drive) I have a chance to use vocational rehab to get a teaching credential (oddly enough not as physically demanding, nor time, and it would leave me the summers for surgeries, …it would just work out well for my family because teachers are needed everywhere) I am not trying to climb the corporate ladder I am just trying to replace lost income and still get myself fixed and off a daily regimen of narcotics, but if it would cost my kids any college time than I will find another way or plan…
Enough of my ranting thanks for reading and for all the things you do.

Hi, you may want to make an appointment with a Voc Rehab Counselor. However, from my understanding of what my counselor told me, since I have the Post 9/11 and was approved for Voc Rehab, I can utilize the benefits for 12 months from Voc Rehab before it would deduct from my Post 9/11 benefits. The funds come from the same funding source. If you decide to utilize your Voc Rehab benefits, you can get paid at the Post 9/11 E-5 with dependents rate. I was also told that Post 9/11 benefits had to be transferred prior to leaving Active Duty. But, I have been misinformed on several things in the past. If you do find out anything to the contrary, please share and let us know-good luck!

If you have not signed months over to your children under the post 9/11 gi bill then you are too late. point blank.
You have to sign an extension of service commitment for signing benefits over. there may be exceptions for certain combat incidents but I do not know of any.

Now as to your question VA voc rehab months count off your GI bill, with one exception, if you utilize or sign over the 48 months to your children then you have 12 months voc rehab left.

If you have no way to get your kids signed over then your best bet woud be to utilize the gi bill and give the kids the housing stipend for their school. OUR utilize grants/scholarships. There is no chp 35 benefits from a federal level for 90% or lower rating, however there may be individual state benefits you can look into.

Here in Oklahoma my kids go to a rural school district with low college attendance rate, so they get 2 years free community college, then since I will be over 50% they get another $5K and a book stipend. if they go on to graduate level they get additional monies.

I appreciate the response:
I am on the waiting list for the vocational rehab counselor; however I am at the back of the list because, I initially said I did not need an appointment when I went through ACAP, because I could have sworn that during the briefings I was told that it deducted from the Gi Bill. Then I was reading some posts on this forum and I had cause to doubt myself. Your advice on transfer is spot on though, it matches what my retention counselor told me (Until my MEB then he stopped talking to me about anything) (Go figure) I also get told a lot of things that are inaccurate here at my post and then I find the truth on this forum.
Thank you

Keep in mind you get the stipend while in voc rehab, its good for an extra 12 months and it covers additional things the gi bill does not cover, such as pro-gear etc. if you need additional college for teaching certificate or special chairs/padding etc. for a classroom environment it may help as well. However if you are at the point of SSDI being approved, you may not qualify, unless you very specifically spell out your plan and your goals of ticket to work etc.
