... IS AWESOME. Seriously. If you have your $**t together, the VA will help you out tremendously. Vocational Rehabilitation is right for you if you show your counselor that you're committed and that you actually care about you future.
I was planning on utilizing my Post 9/11 GI Bill when I separated from the military before getting injured. My intent was to become a full time student and complete my masters without having a full time job. However, since I now qualify for Voc Rehab, it has opened up new doors that allow my goal to become a reality.
As a single father with 100% custody of his two kiddos, I see myself struggling with a full-time job coupled with being a full-time college student. However, Voc Rehab has mitigated a lot of that stress. I don't have to worry about paying for random things that colleges love to nickel and dime you for (books [and the $1000 stipend the Post 9/11 give you does not cover a year's worth of books], parking fees, admin fees, orientation fees, ID card fees, etc.). I haven't even attended one single class and have already paid a stupid amount of money to a PUBLIC four year college. But, I'm not the least bit worried because I know that I will be reimbursed.
Seriously, I had two appointments and I'm already approved to partake in everything that Voc Rehab has to offer. I had all of my ducks in a row, so to speak; paperwork completed, transcripts, job listings, etc. I'm getting a laptop/printer grant; paper checks in the mail for things that I've already paid for (orientation fees, ID fees, parking passes). It's stupid easy.
If you're on the fence and have heard horror stories, I suggest you give it a shot if you qualify. And if you have a crappy counselor, then bug the hell out of them (or their boss, or their boss's boss). With my injury, I am unable to perform any jobs that require heavy lifting or standing for thirty minutes or more. That basically limits my job opportunities to desk jobs. Hell, I can't even work at McDonalds without sitting on a stool or something the whole time. Voc Rehab was made for dudes like me. Give it a chance.
