I just completed the IDES process. Received a medical retirement with 100% DOD/VA. My official DOS is 02 March 2020. When should I receive my first VA payment?

Thanks

You should receive a payment for 1-30 April 2020 on/about 1 May 2020.

Your VA compensation will not begin to accrue until the first day of the month following the month having the effective date.

Example: Discharged 30 November 2019; entered into retired status 1 December 2019. VA comp effective date 1 December 2019.
First accrual: 1-31 January 2020
First payment: 1 February 2020

How do you find your effective date?

How do you find your effective date?
The VA award letter cites the effective date.

Since you are not yet separated/retired, IF "official DOS is 02 March 2020" is Date of Separation, then the first day not on active duty is 3 March 2020 and the likely VA comp effective date.

I am not familiar with all the acronyms used today. I just found, "In military, DOS means date of separation>"

Wow, 100% each huh? You must of had serious referred conditions because I hear 100% DOD is hard to come by...

I’m actually separated. My last day was January 16th. My effective date is February 1st. Any idea on when I see my first check.

There is a difference between effective date and payment start date.

If your first day after date of separation is 17 January, the effective date could be 17 January. Then the payment start date would be 1 February and first payment received around 28 February 2020 since the first of March is Sunday and the 29th of February is on Saturday.

I’m pretty broken.

Thank you

I’m so sorry Ron this is the message benefits is giving me:
  • The effective date of the last change to your current award was February 1 what does that mean?

Ref: https://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/text/38/5111

"... payment of monetary benefits based on an award or an increased award of compensation, dependency and indemnity compensation, or pension may not be made to an individual for any period before the first day of the calendar month following the month in which the award or increased award became effective as provided under section 5110 of this title or such other provision of law."

All I can offer is that the effective day and the first accrual of VA compensation are as I explained and in accordance with the law I cited above. On the other hand, I have seen info on eBenefits (where you apparently got the 1 February date) that is misleading. Do you have a VA award letter? If so, recommend reviewing that, I would be interested in what you find.

Of course, the effective date of a VA award is not always the first day after the DOS. However, since you just completed the IDES, I would think the effective date would be DOS+ 1.

Your questions are welcome.

You will see the law pertaining to accrual of VA compensation in one of my more recent posts in this thread.

eBenefits can be confusing.

This is from my benefits letter on eBenefits:
Gross Benefit Amount $x,xxx.96
Net Amount Paid $x,xxx.96
Effective Date December 1, 2019
This was the effective date of the most recent COLA increase and I received the increased amount at the end of December.

All my initial awards and increases (except for COLA) have effective dates such as,
--April 18, 2007
--August 29, 2006
--December 19, 2015

In each of the three cases listed, the effective date was during a certain month, but the initial accrual or increase started the first day of the following month.
For example, the increase effective December 19, 2015 began January 1, 2016 and I was paid at the higher rate on/about February 1, 2016.

Note the difference of how eBenefits shows the effective date (for COLA) in the letter as opposed to the listing of effective dates.

Did you find a copy of your VA award letter?

Based on you having an effective date of January 17 for VA compensation...you should receive your first payment on 28 February 2020 since the 29th is on Saturday and the first is on Sunday.

I use eBenefits only to submit claims and change my checking account (once). Otherwise, I never beam it up.

Good luck,

Ron
