Update to my DES time line

For those who are just getting started, the time it takes from start to exiting the military depends on many things. My case has taken a while although my issues aren't that complex.

I was told it could take up to a year and at this point it may exceed that if I am found unfit and have to wait for the VA to access a rating.

My advice to those just starting is stay out of trouble and work as hard as possible. Despite my medical issues I have worked really hard and my unit wants me to be found fit because even though I'm hurt and can't do up to 50% of my job I do it very well. I exceed all expectations. I have found that you are treated much better this way.

It may be as short as four months or longer than a year. It's hard to wait and have no clue what's going on but you can do it.

My DES pilot time line:

Jan. 29 Date of Physician's Notification of MEB Action
Feb. 9 Date of initial PEBLO Counseling
July 9 Physical Exam Completed
Sept. 13 Date of MEB Physician Appointment
Nov. 30 Signed NARSUM
Dec. 1 NARSUM received by PEB

The PEB has about 40 calendar days to make a decision. Therefore I may not find out my disposition until Jan. 10, 2011. I'll update again then.

Mine seems to have taken much shorter of a time frame, at least the beginning stages of it.

I was notified around dec 1st of the pending MEB actions, 20 dec I had my MEB written. Just waiting on the commanders letter to be sent in and its going to the local board. I was told I would be all said and done, with IPEB results and all, by the end of Feb!

Hopefully that works out for you. It all depends on where you're stationed. We have a lot of folk going through the program here and there weren't enough doctors for us all.

By the way, are you in the DES pilot program? It sounds like you may be under the old system. Did you meet with a VA rep and doctor during the process? If not then you're under the old system. The old system is just the military and the VA isn't involved.

If you're in the DES pilot program then you may not meet your deadline. You would have to meet with a VA doctor for a physical, then you will probably get a few appointments, you'll get with the dotor who is going to write your NARSUM and once it's approved by the hospital and you it's sent to the IPEB, after that is returned and if you agree with the findings then that is sent to the VA for them to assess a rating.

I have seen some people in the pilot program get finished in about four-six months but that is really fast. I was told it may take from nine months to a year when I started.

If you're in the old system I would contact the VA rep at your duty station (on or off post) and see about starting the VA process sooner rather than later.

How do they determine who is in the pilot program and who is not?

It depends on if your MTF is participating in the pilot program or not (now called the integrated DES). You can ask your PEBLO if you are or not.

I've heard that the IDES will be implemented worldwide by next spring. Hopefully they get the kinks worked out by then if that's the case.

My package was sent off to the PEB on Dec, 23rd and i'm on the Pilot program, about how long should it take them to come up with my finding?

According to the DoD Policy Memorandum Implementing the 2008 NDAA, the IPEB has 40 days to return your packet. With said, it could be longer. It all depends on the board.

If you are found unfit, agree with the IPEB, your paperwork would be sent to the VA to assess a rating. That timeline varies as well. My PEBLO told me my packet (when sent to the VA) may take about six weeks.
