Type I Diabetes--Tips for Successful Appeal?

Hi all, I'm an active duty AF member with 10 years of service, I have Type I Diabetes, and have just received the reponse from my Informal PEB which recommended a discharge with severance pay (20% disability rating) which seems like a fairly standard result.

I intend to appeal, and my first goal for the appeal will be seeking Return to Duty, but I gather that especially in the AF, this is a difficult result to come by. I'd love to hear from any of you who have success stories in this regard, as to what your tips are to present the strongest case.

Here's my brief history: originally diagnosed after being hospitalized 5 years ago for a separate, perhaps indirectly related condition--they found sugar in my urine, check my BG a few times, and sent me home a few days later with all my new Diabetes supplies. First MEB was delayed for 6 months, to see how I stabilized with the condition, and over this time we found that I was able to control my BG with oral meds/diet only (although tests revealed that I was type 1, and would eventually require insulin--MEB returned me to duty. Fast forward about 4 years, I began taking ~ 4 shots of insulin a day (lantus and novolog)... which brings me to the latest MEB result.

Other data points submitted with my IPEB:
- Scored 100 on my last 4 PFAs and I PT/run long distance without any limitations
- Received a strong endorsement from my CC (O6) saying no problems completing my duties and recommending retention
- My career field is undermanned (70% effective manning)

Thanks to anyone who can offer any advice/input as I approach this appeal process!

You need to prove why they need you.... If I was you I would get letters from your doctors saying you would have no problem continuing service and then letters from Commanders, First Shirts, Supervisors pretty much very one you have worked with that has had any supervision over you saying what a stand up person you are, hard worker, and that the Air Force needs you. I would want to come in with like 10-20 letters so they are over loaded with them. If its something that can be swayed that would really help out at the FPEB
