TDRL First Re-Evaluation

Well I have orders to go to Naval Training Command Great Lakes for re-evaluation of my first round of TDRL. I am VERY nervous, and honestly scared because things have gone well. My first 18 month timeline was up in July, and the soonest they could get me in is next week. They are very backed up.

I guess what my concerns are is that since I have been on Advair 500/50 since 2004 that the "12 hour" no medication restriction prior to my evaluation will not be accurate. I have had 2 pulmonologists tell me that is takes a couple days before its effectivness wears off because it builds in your system. So this would mean that my PFT results could be inflated.

I have had two doctors tell me I have had Moderate to Severe Persistant asthma (I have their records), and since the military or the VA refused my requests for a Sleep Apnea test, my polmonologist sent me to see a sleep specialist right after I was seperated, but the wait was so long for the actual test I missed my 1 year request for adding service connected disabilities. I have documentation to prove that I was in process of testing during that time frame, but I am getting no help. I also was told that sleep apnea is not helping my asthma any and possibly could be exaserbating it so do you think the TDRL evaluators will take this into consideration?

Or should I just chill out, present the records do the evaluation, and have faith in the borken system (what will be will be?)

Two issues here: Fitness and rating.

If you are on Advair 500/50, then the minimum rating is 30%. The Pulmonary Fitness Test could push you to a higher rating, but the minimum would be 30%.

Fitness: This is a whole other issue. If your asthma prevents reasonable performance of duties of your grade and rate, then you should be unfit.

You mentioned missing "adding service connected disabilities" due to the one year window. If you made the claim within a year of leaving service (different than them giving a rating for the condition(s)), then it should still count. It is the date of claim, not the date of award that drives the one year window.

Not sure whether they will take the sleep apnea into account, but if it impacts your condition, they should.

Best of luck!

Thank you Jason. I guess my problem is that I just don't trust many if any military doctors right now.

Just got back from Great Lakes for my first TDRL Eval. It seemed to go extremely well which was a pleasant surprise. The TDRL liaison (I can't remember her name) had everything timed and planed so that I hit each appointment like clockwork to include the doctor. Then we talked about the next process, and she filled out the majority of my travel claim (and gave me a spare) so I have minimal inforamtion to fill out when I complete it. All in all I have to say for the 7 hour drive (one way) it was very positive. Now I have to wait two weeks for the MEB to make a decision which for me the waiting in limbo is the worst part.

The MEB won't make a decision, once your docs write their summarys it goes straight to the PEB for disposition since you are on TDRL.

Atleast thats what I was told.

Wow... Well someone dropped the ball, and of course no one knows what happened. I had my appointment on October 8th, 2010 and was told that I should have a result in about two weeks. Contacted the TDRL rep in DC and got a voice mail on November 15th. No return phone call so we called again on November 22nd, and received the full inbox recording from the voicemail. Called yet again a couple days later and was able to leave another message. Just got a call on the December 1st saying that they knew nothing, and that they thought that I was still awaiting an appointment since they had never received my package. Contacted Great Lakes to inquire what happened, and was told that they sent my package in November some time. So Great Lakes had my package for a month before they claim to have sent it, and now no one knows where it is, so they are going to send it again. So DC was very nice, and took my e-mail and is going to let me know when the board makes the decision.

At this rate I don't know if I am getting the due process that I deserve because I was NOT allowed to review my package prior to it being sent, and since the first package was "lost" I am very concerned as to what they "re-sent" to the board.........

Sorry to hear that they dropped the ball. I think the issue with them not providing impartial review and opportunity to rebut is a significant issue. Of course, it will only be important if you get an outcome that you are unhappy with.
