I just signed my TDRL paperwork today and I asked if I could pick my seperation date. I've always ready on here that you can pick between 30-90 days. She started talking about PTDY and said I had to take it before before I seperate. I was always under the idea that when you seperated and then took your PTDY to give you time to get all your ducks in a row (house, job, and such). So with the idea of having to fly from Germany to the States for 30 days and then fly back I said you know what I would like to pass on the whole PTDY package then because school starts in early September and if I seperate in 30 days that will give me just enough time to get back home and adjust then go to school right away so Im not seperating in September... she said well thats not going to happen AFPC picks your seperation date for you and I should expect seperation date 4-6 months from now. Could some one clearify this for me?

I signed my paperwork and AFPC then sent me my final separation date. I arranged my leave and PTDY so I was able to effectively be finished 60 days prior to my sep date. If you aren't getting the answer you want from the individual, talk with someone else.....sounds ike you are talking only with the PEB person, get someone over in finance/travel for the correct answer.

So is what you are saying lets say they give me a date of 30 October... I can have my PTDY from 1 Oc-30 Oct then my leave added into that and that just be my terminal leave... but I accually get out of the military in early septemeber?

You must begin your PTDY the day after you final out process the unit and base you are assigned to. You must take the PTDY in all one chunk, and IF you are taking terminal leave, it must begin the day after your PTDY ends. So for example; I applied for 20 days PTDY beginning 31 Aug and ending 19 Aug, then applied on a separate 988 for 4 days Terminal Leave starting 21 Aug, ending 23 Aug. Although I will have out processed base/squadron as of 30 Jul--I will not be officially retired (i.e. separated) from the military until 24 Aug ...

What this means for you is that yes you can choose your separation date (somewhat), provided AFPC approves and it does not exceed the 90 day cutoff, AND your requested day does not fall in the middle of a month. If you are being medically separated, you will NOT separate any later than 90 days from day of signing for (concurring with) IPEB/FPEB package. AFPC WILL NOT extend your date of separation to allow you to use up all your leave/PTDY benefits. SO, if your separation date is Oct 30...and you are taking 30 days PTDY PLUS terminal leave then your final day at your unit/base would be 30 days PTDY + XX days terminal leave...if you wanted 30 days terminal leave, you would start PTDY 1 September, and go through 30 September, then your Terminal leave would kick in 1 October and end 30 October (which if it is your approved separation date would be your final day in the military. This means you would have to complete your final outprocessing of your unit/base on 31 August. (All PTDY/Terminal leave requests must be submitted in paper to the commander, he approves or not as he sees fit, then the forms go to finance to be given leave routing numbers and will be fully approved once finance has signed off on both.) If you have more days of leave than you can use in conjunction with your PTDY, then you either take full Terminal Leave OR (and in my opinion this makes more sense as your time is limited for med separation/retirement) Take your PTDY, take as much terminal leave as you can, and sell back any left over leave. That way you get an extra chunk of change on separation, AND you still draw BAH/BAS while on Terminal leave/PTDY.

I signed my paperwork over 30 days ago. My coworker is nearly at 6 weeks. How long does it take to get a "final" date.

Unfortunately, PTDY leave will be used all in one chunk, however you have to return to your command when the ptdy leave is finished. Then you can begin your leave. I am stationed in hawaii and in order for me to take ptdy days (30) i have to leave the island and fly back. I can take 20 days ptdy leave on island. Also, while on ptdy leave i believe you wont recieve medical coverage because it is "excess leave"

But with me being in Germany will I have to outprocess... fly all the way back home... spend the 30 days and then fly all the way back... that would be a big waste of time and money. I would think they would just pay you during the 30 days and then after that the % they gave me starts. Also how long do you usually wait untill you get a seperation date? When should I start bugging someone about not having one?

Also I'm overseas so I can't pocket any BAH anyways so I just want to get on a plane as soon as I can

You should be bugging someone about a separation date - there is a separation/retirement transition point on every U.S. military post/base/station/camp - this should be a good starting point.

I sent AFPC an email yesterday asking when I should hear from them about my seperation date and that I would like at the end of next Month so I could attend school and they relied back today saying orders are getting cut 28 Aug is the date they game me.. so I will have enough time to fly back home from Germany go to bed and get up bright and early for school... it won't be a fun week adjusting but it will be worth it.

Adjusting to a new sleeping pattern is one of the many things you will be adjusting to. Transitioning from the military to the civilian world was a very odd time for me (and over a year later, I'd say I'm still in the process) and I'm sure it is a weird time for all Veterans. I think getting back into school immediately is good though, you will be keeping yourself busy! Good luck!
