Retired Pay Until VA Kicks in

Hello, my retire date is 13NOV17. I got 50% perm from Army and 100% total. I know there is a gap in between when I get out and when I get my first VA pmt. I have just under 20 years, so I would not get both checks. My question is, will I get my Army retired pay (as listed on the DA Form 5892) for Dec, minus taxes, and then 01JAN (or thereabouts) receive my VA check plus the difference?

Thank you!

The VA, like DOD, pays you after the time period. The VA also doesn't start until the month after separation. So in your case, the VA first pays you for 1-31DEC, and actually pays out on 1JAN (pretending holidays don't exist). If you send your DD-214 on your retirement date, that's 6 weeks for them to finalize your ratings.

So, in any case, you will not receive any money in Dec. My understanding is that if the VA isn't done before Jan, you'll receive your DOD pay on 1JAN.

Also, keep in mind your last paycheck from DOD will likely be held for a short time (few days to few weeks) before DFAS releases it.

Well this is GREAT news...not! Good luck with your transition, we may have to hold your money for a bit lol.

Subsequent question, hope I can tag it on here.....

If your retirement date is 3 Aug 17, you should get your retirement pay (first check) on 1 Sep right? (Minus 3 days)

I had read that somewhere else and was "Banking" on this....

I have a question about Va pay... do they back date it? For example, my retirement date was 17jul, and I was told va pay started in aug... but I didn't receive anything from them in aug and I still haven't received my finalized disability rating from the va (it was proposed 60% but I also am adding 3 conditions on so I'm assuming that slow down the final rating). Appreciate any help!

Incorrect. 3AUG (beginning of the month) is basically the least optimal time to separate. DOD pays for actual days worked, for you that's 3 days. VA does not pay you until the month you were no longer on active duty, in your case they'll pay you for SEP. But the earliest you'd actually receive that money is 1OCT; they pay you after you've "earned" it, like DOD. So you are getting no compensation between 3AUG and 1SEP.

Edit: are you talking va disability or dod retirement pay?

Same thing is crossing you up. VA will pay you FOR August, but the pay date would be 1SEP. They pay after you earn it. Now, if the final ratings are not done you will not receive disability payment on 1SEP. But whenever they do finalize, they'll pay you backdated to 1AUG.

I was asking about retirement pay. However, I did hear today my VA rating was imminent. I would be notified in a few days. So I receive my first VA check then pretty soon? ( As I am not getting my retirement check as I though :( )

Thanks!

I didn't get my first DoD payment for 2 months. Just a heads up.

I did not get a cent from the Army during the waiting period. Was medically retired on May 7th, final VA rating came in late May with an effective date of June 1st. First direct deposit was July 1st (June 30th because USAA give the $$ a dat early).

Therefore I went 24 days with zero compensation (although I did get a mid month pay and a end of month pay in May for leave I sold back.) Fortunately I was financially prepared.

I get what you are saying...somewhat. What is confusing me is my PEBLO and the PEBLO supervisor both told me that I would get the DoD retired pay starting 01DEC until my first VA check comes. At that point they would pay me the difference between the two, plus reimburse for taxes taken out. So I need to NOT bank on receiving any form of pmt until POSSIBLY Jan...and including my last Active Army check

So I can attest that you are suppose to get paid DoD retired pay until the VA sends the DoD the official benefits letter. At that point, the DoD will issue a stop payment. I just got off the phone with DFAS and they confirmed. I retired Sept 19 and got paid retirement Oct 1 for the 11 days of retirement.

Funny thing was that back in 2014 DFAS would not pay me from May 8th - May 31st. My VA C&P began on June 1st.
