Jordanacosta31 I'm not sure of your branch, but you will begin by being assigned a case manager, who will give you a form for Your MH provider to fill out if they feel you meet retention standards, based on the DSM-5 (This form doesn't have a DD number that I know of, it's basically a letter of instruction that comes with the DD Form 2780 and Medcom form 756 attached to it, asking your MH Provider if you meet retention standards.)
If your MH provider believes you do not meet retention standards, you'll likely be given a Permanent Profile for MH, either P2 or P3
You will also be counseled by your Commander on your fitness to stay in the military, and you will also talk to retention.
If your Commander finds you unfit for duty, the counseling will be sent back to your case manager stating so, at which point you will begin the MEB process
Retention will also then change your ets date to be open until the completion of your medboard.
After that, you will likely be assigned a PEBLO and a VA Military Services Coordinator, or MSC.
You'll then be given some more paperwork to fill out by both, after which you'll get your C&P exams dates.
Once you do your C&P exams, it may take anywhere from 30 days to several months to get your results back, both on if you will be Medically Retired, and what, if any VA rating you will get.
If they decide to medically retire you, you will either be put on the Temporary Disability Retired List (TDRL) or the Permanent Disability Retired List (PDRL)
They may also decide you don't warrant a Medical Retirement, and should be given severance.
Unlikely, but you may also be found as fit for duty, and returned to duty status.
If you disagree with the findings on your Medboard or your VA ratings, you will have the option to appeal.
After that's completed, if you're unfit for duty, you will then get your orders for medical retirement/severance stating the date of your final out well in advance of your last day in the military.
Because of red tape, and some miscommunication between my Commander and case manager, my process took just over 2 years; yours may be much shorter, or a bit longer.
Once I was assigned a PEBLO and MSC, the process from there only took 4 months before I got my final orders + VA ratings; again, this may take less or more time for you depending on alot of factors
