I was given a rating for my disease which is like MS. I was given 30% THEN each extremity affected was given a separate rating. Right arm 10%, right leg 20%, left leg 10%. I was given an updated rating and and the percentages were removed. Which way is the correct way? With or without extremity percentages. Thanks

It has a minimum rating of 30%, however the condition is rated based upon the areas that are affected. Because 10%, 20% and 10% round up to 40%, you will get that rather than the minimum rating of 30%.

For the condition of NMO, you should receive 40% based upon what information you have provided. You may find yourself requesting a ratings upgrade in the future if the condition worsens, especially if it affects your optic nerve.

Code 8018: Multiple sclerosis (a.k.a. MS) is a degenerative disease that gets worse over time and causes the tissues surrounding the axons in the brain and spinal cord to swell, disconnecting the brain from the rest of the body. Symptoms get worse over time and include loss of coordination, weakness, difficulty eating (7203, 9901), muscle spasms or tics (8103-8104), difficulty breathing (6840-6841), nerve paralysis, double vision (6009), depression (9434), and other mental disorders. It is rated on the Central Nervous Rating System. The minimum rating for this condition is 30%.

Thanks you! That made so much more sense that what I have been hearing!

This is good news as well. Thank you for posting this.

I have MS as well and I was under the impression each area that is affected is rated separately?

This is interesting. I got my ratings back earlier this week and MS wasn't given a rating. Actually it wasn't listed. All the residuals were listed and given separate ratings with (due to multiple sclerosis) next to each one.

I'm in the US Public Health Service as an 0-5 and just over 20 years of combined DOD and USPHS service . I was diagnosed with MS in July of 2015. Have a request in for a fitness-for-duty due to significant symptoms. Paperwork in since December of 2015. Neurologist recommended a retirement and I requested the same. Has anyone ever heard of a medical board taking over a year to meet? Anyone get a rating less than 30%. What are the usual ratings (I have numerous problems that are only getting worse)?

MS should not be less than 30%. Could be more if they rate the individual nerves affected.

The MEB can take over year, each case is different.

I have MS as well. Just ensure all symptoms in regard to MS are listed and claimed. Each symptom will be rated individually. In regards to the MEB and MS you come out way better that way and should get more than 30% easy. My claims related to MS ended up adding up to 90% with VA math. With all other claims not MS related it took me to 100% easy. Hope this helps. If you have any questions feel free to reach out.

Do you have a coly of the letter you submitted? I am requesting a fitness for duty for Narcolepsy

Thank You, Everyone,
I was initially given a 30% rating for my condition, which is similar to MS. This was then broken down further: 10% for the right arm, 20% for the right leg, and 10% for the left leg. However, my updated rating no longer includes these specific percentages. Which method is the correct one: the original breakdown by extremity or the updated rating without these details?
