Question prior to VA appts

I wasn't sure where to place this. We are getting conflicting information regarding my husband's upcoming VA appts for his ratings. We are currently stationed in South Korea (Osan) and were told originally that I would be able to travel with him to those appointments, via the Non-Medical Attendant policy (and have my travel be paid for). As it is getting closer and we are making scheduling appointments we were informed today that because it does not state that he would need a Non-Medical Attendant in his original NARSUM that I will be paying for my own flight to the appointments. Does anyone have any experience with this? Would we go to Tricare (my husband is currently on active duty) or to the VA for that? Any help would be greatly appreciated as a short-term intercontinental flight can get pretty pricey!

AMeadows1984,
I do not have the regulation in front of me but I have had to use the non-medical attendant before when having surgery overseas. I was only allowed a non-medical attendant after a fight and it was because I had to drive to different locations after surgery, which I would not have been able to do because of the surgery. The medical staff were quick to pull out the regs on it and it took my doc (in germany) writing me a letter saying I would need it. So in my own experience I would say that he would probably not be allowed a non-medical attendant for his appointments. But that is just my 2cents, good luck.

Thanks - my husband has diagnosed PTSD, and anxiety as well as other things and really does need me there - so I'm hoping this isn't the case. Although I will suck it up and pay for the flight if necessary, I was just hoping we could get a break on this one thing, lol.
