Question on med benefits expiring when asking for a formal PEB

Hi there. We just sent our paperwork in for my husband to request a formal PEB. Our ID cards expire on 5/24/11 and we were "offered" 10% from the PEB (he currently has 100% rating through VA-due to losing job bcse of medications, prior was 70%). We have been talking to Jason and he indicated it could be a couple of months to get the final answer (and are in the process of retaining Jason). So, my question....does our medical extend until formal PEB findings or will it terminate on 05/24/11? Thanks for any advice!

mom22sons,

Active duty ID cards or retirement ID cards? Either way, you should remain on tricare until separated from active duty or taken off retirement (TDRL or PDRL) list. Not sure which applies in your case... as you did not specify in your post. I would go speak with DEERS about new ID cards with a later expiration.

If your husband is going to a FPEB, he will not be released from active duty until up to 90 days after the results of the FEB findings (assuming he accepts them and does not appeal again). Because he is still on active duty he will get a new ID card. If he is an officer, they just print them up for another 3 years or so, if he is enlisted, I am not sure how they do the time period since he would not have a new enlistment contract, but the folks at the MPF most likely have a standard amount of time they extend them for in these cases.

I'm sure that I am too late in answering your question so I apologize but I hope that your situation is different than ours. Our 5 yrs on TDRL was up on 5/14 so our ID cards expired then. "By law" you cannot be on TDRL longer than 5 years. Despite the fact we are appealing the Navy's decision to separate my husband vice retire him and the appeal hearing isn't scheduled until late July, they essentially kicked him off TDRL and cut off benefits and priveleges - no TRICARE. BUPERS told him his status is "limbo". How's that for official?! So in short, if your 5 years is up, your 5 years is up and so are your medical benefits. They will NOT extend them. There is a military equivalent of COBRA called TAMPS I believe. However, the military person has to be coded in DEERS as "separated eligible for TAMPS". You cannot be coded that way until your final PEB has been processed. Hence, "limbo".
