I am currently being medically retired after 20 years 8 months and 12 days in the USAF. I am rated at 80% by the Air Force and have a proposed rating of 90% from the VA. I was told I would only receive 50% of my base pay since I opted to receive VA benefits is this correct? IF so I understand with Concurrent receipt i would get 1800 and some change from the DOD and 1960 for the VA (married +3). Someone else told me I would get 80% of my base pay and still get the 1960 for the VA. Can anyone shed some light on this

I am in the exact same boat as you except time in service, I have 23 yrs 1 month 5 days service for basic pay. My service for basic pay is 30 yrs 5 months 5 days, I had Res/NG time as well. I Just got this info in the mail today that you are asking about. I originally was given a letter from the Retired Pay Department (Defense Finance & Accounting Service) stating what I would make at 75% (max DoD) eventhough I got 80% from the AF and 57.7% (Reg Retire for me, yourpercentage will be different to reflect your time in service). I was collecting the 75% DoD until the VA finally came through with 90% which begins 1 Sept. Today I received a Retiree Account Statement in the mail stating that my pay will now reflect the 57.7% Retire pay for me. The VA letter stated that I will receive 90% which is $1902 per month (married with child). You don't opt for the VA over DoD, you get whichever is more beneficial for you. I now have to try and figure out the tax thing, never ending battle.

The way I heard it explained was:
Take the amount of your retirement pay and subteract the amount you will receive from the VA. What is lest from the YOS (years of service) retirement is taxed VA is not. If you quilify for CRDP (20+ years and at least 50% from the VA) that money is added back in to equal but not exxceed the amount or your YOS retirement. IF you have combat related conditions or hazardous duty, training simulating combat or intrument of war you cak apply for CRSC. Keep in mind that only those conditions that fall into one of thse catagories can be used. Often in particular with the senior pay grades CRDP even taxed can leave you with more money that non-taxed CRSC. As with eveything double check with SJA, your PEBLO or the agency that runs MEB's for your service. Things are changing so quickly it is hard to keep up.
