General Rating Formula for Mental Disorders:
Total occupational and social impairment, due to such symptoms as:
gross impairment in thought processes or communication;
persistent delusions or hallucinations; grossly inappropriate
behavior; persistent danger of hurting self or others; intermittent
inability to perform activities of daily living (including maintenance
of minimal personal hygiene); disorientation to time or place; memory
loss for names of close relatives, own occupation, or own name .................... 100
Occupational and social impairment, with deficiencies in most areas,
such as work, school, family relations, judgment, thinking, or mood,
due to such symptoms as: suicidal ideation; obsessional rituals
which interfere with routine activities; speech intermittently illogical,
obscure, or irrelevant; near-continuous panic or depression affecting
the ability to function independently, appropriately and effectively;
impaired impulse control (such as unprovoked irritability with periods
of violence); spatial disorientation; neglect of personal appearance and
hygiene; difficulty in adapting to stressful circumstances (including
work or a worklike setting); inability to establish and maintain

productivity due to such symptoms as: flattened affect; circumstantial,
circumlocutory, or stereotyped speech; panic attacks more than once
a week; difficulty in understanding complex commands; impairment
of short- and long-term memory (e.g., retention of only highly learned
material, forgetting to complete tasks); impaired judgment; impaired
abstract thinking; disturbances of motivation and mood; difficulty in
establishing and maintaining effective work and social relationships ................ 50
Occupational and social impairment with occasional decrease in work
efficiency and intermittent periods of inability to perform occupational
tasks (although generally functioning satisfactorily, with routine
behavior, self-care, and conversation normal), due to such symptoms
as: depressed mood, anxiety, suspiciousness, panic attacks (weekly or
less often), chronic sleep impairment, mild memory loss (such as
forgetting names, directions, recent events) ....................................................... 30
Occupational and social impairment due to mild or transient symptoms
which decrease work efficiency and ability to perform occupational
tasks only during periods of significant stress, or; symptoms controlled
by continuous medication .................................................................................. 10
A mental condition has been formally diagnosed, but symptoms are not
severe enough either to interfere with occupational and social
functioning or to require continuous medication.................................................. 0
I don't think "always" can ever be used within the DES.

It all depends on your GAF score, like above.
The GAF score will come out of your VA BH meeting. You probably won't be able to catch a glimpse of it until your NARSUM comes back and your PEBLO puts your packet together to send to IPEB.
There are a few posts that warn not to base your research on ratings solely on your GAF score. The above post from Pittpan2005 is the best help to try to estimate your ratings.
I just got my ratings back from the VA and I was expecting a 30% but they actually gave me 50% for my PTSD. My GAF is 54. Here is exactly what my paperwork states for my rating:
We have assigned a 50% evaluation for your PTSD to include dysthymia based on:
- Suicidal ideation
- The examiner's assessment of your current mental functioning, which is partially reflected in your GAF score
- Occupational and social impairment with occasional decrease in work efficiency and intermittent periods of inability to perform occupational tasks
- Anxiety; depressed mood; mild memory loss; and panic attacks (less than weekly)
I know that no two cases are the same but maybe this could help give you an idea. Good luck!
I had a GAF score of 60 but no suicidal..more homicidal mine actually said I would hurt someone. Any idea of what my rating might be? I mean the GAF score all depends on your mood at that time. I am the opposite of you guys..I remember all details because of hyper-vigilance. I pay to much attention to detail. short term memory is awesome long term not as much. She annotated I sold all my firearms because I would hurt people
My GAF was the same and I got 50%
Are you guys talking about TDRL ratings or PDRL?
A GAF of 60 still falls in the moderate range but it a lot depends on the write-up your doc did.
Unfortunately, I'm not referring to either. The 50% is what the VA is proposing since the IPEB did not consider my PTSD to be unfitting.
Mine was considered unfitting.
Well I understand Gaf varies from day to day but the va doc during my c&p exams stated all kinds of stuff usually fitting a lower Gaf score. Plus my other MH docs have said a lot.
Hey Grizz, I have the same GAF also from the VA. Did you get the 50% from the VA or from the Army? I don't think the Army is going to rate my PTSD as unfitting, but how does the VA do it? Is it 50% for good, or is it re-evaluated often? If I get 50% for PTSD it'll take me to 100% from the VA.
