The VA is testing a new way to screen for prostate cancer. Instead of using the same test for everyone, this new approach looks at a Veteran’s genes and family history to figure out their real risk.
They’re looking for male Veterans ages 55 to 69 who’ve never had prostate cancer or a prostate biopsy. If someone joins, the VA mails out a simple saliva kit. You send it back, and they use it to check your genetic risk. After that, participants are placed in either the standard screening group or the new precision screening group.
They are looking to cut down on unnecessary biopsies, and it might help catch cancer earlier in higher-risk Veterans.
It’s an easy way to take part in research that could help a lot of people down the road.
