possibly a dumb question about moving

So I have a couple of questions here regarding moving.

1. I have heard that the military, if you are retiring (which I assume includes med retirement) will allow you to chose where you are moving to instead of only paying you for a move to your home of record. Is that true?

2. I have not the first clue where I am moving to as I have not yet found gainful employment outside of the military. Will the military give me time to move or will it be a if I do not decide immediately they will not pay me to move?

3. How does the payment for a move work? Say if I do not know where I want to go and there is not a window will I get any kind of "moving pay" or is it all out the window? Travel pay, moving our house hold goods, etc is that all gone if I do not chose somewere to move to?

2. One year to move.

3. You have to move to get the "moving pay".
 
Awesome man thank you. I guess the third one, after re-reading it, was kinda a stupidly asked question that was simply an extension of the second one haha. But thank you. Removes a lot of the stress to know that I do have time after I retire to make my decision.

Another thing...I'm pretty sure they will pay for storage for your household goods for up to a year.

I need to look into this further, but the AW2 advocate told us that we could store our HHG for up to a year and then have it forwarded to wherever we decide to move. However, she said it would go to a storage facility in California (we are in Hawaii), so it seems that they will only store it if you have a gov't move, not a DITY, so you won't have any access to your stored property until you have it delivered.

Uh...I'm not sure about that. I'd call the transportation office and ask them about it.
 
You can also request an extension of time of storage with a memo to the transportation office. While I was not medically retired, when I separated, I ran into a situation where my final move was not finalized until after the time allotted for storage of HHG. I received an extension of time by requesting it through my local transportation office.
You would want to check on this as the regulations can change over time. BTW, your reference is the Joint Federal Travel Regulation.

Correct. You have the one year, but can request an extension every 90 days thereafter.

As far as DITY, you take what you need with you and then put the rest into storage and have the government move it once you get settled. You will be paid your travel entitlements and your DITY weight for what you took with you. Then after you get settled, you call transpo and they will arrange to get the rest of your stuff delivered. For me, I loaded up my travel trailer with what I needed and headed west. I got my DITY and travel entitlements within 45 days of transitioning. Then once I settled about 6 months later I had them deliver my household goods. It's called a "partial DITY"
 
I also had my stuff in storage and took more than a year (waiting on the VA to finish my rating). I asked for an extension and was given up to another year. Keep in mind, the cost for that extra time will come out of your pocket, although it's at the government rate. Also it does go to a central storage area that you do not have access to (I think mine was in Virginia).
 
Is this benefit for shipping household goods available for National Guard and Reservists who were not on active duty when they went through the IDES process??? I just received a postcard from DFAS reminding me that this benefit will expire one year after disability retirement. Thanks all!!!!

Indeed. If you were medically retired, pretty sure all moving benefits discussed above in this thread apply.

For sure. I would suggest calling a transportation office at your nearest military instillation (preferably of the same branch of service you were) and asking them about your situation--as far as, how you need to setup your move, documentation and where exactly to submit/file all of the documentation of the move. Are you familiar at all with DITY move?

Thanks again. I got a hold of JBLM and was told to email them so I did. Not sure how long this wait will be but am hoping they are more efficient than the MEB/PEB process. I got out in JAN 2013 so too late for DITY move as I am already in CA. All of my stuff is here in storage. We in the reserve components don't get much information at all on what is available to us. Very unfortunate. But if I can take advantage of it now for the upcoming move then that's a good thing. Thanks again!!!
