Possible MEB????

I recently had nerve release surgery on my neck to help with chronic neck/shoulder pain and migraines. I was called my someone at the clinic to tell me my record had been tagged for MEB because of this surgery. He said they would re-evaluate my condition in 1 year. I have less than 1 year left in the AF. The surgery didn't fix my problems and I'm looking at a second surgery. Can anyone explain to me how the whole MEB thing works since I was "tagged" but said I would be re-evaluated later??? I wish they would just MEB me and let me know. I'm in constant pain at work and I'm miserable.

cashp,

Welcome!

My records were coded for an MEB for a number of months. But, my PCM didn't initiate the MEB process until after I received surgeries and treatment.

My PCM and civilan doctors monitored me after treatment/surgeries, and my condition was pretty much the same with an expected long recovery period. Then the MEB was initiated.

I went to my AFPEBLO and asked for a packet that explained the process of the PDES. Or, you can try this link: AFPC - Air Force Personnel Center

I hope this helps.

Thanks for the info. I left a message with the PEBLO but haven't heard back. Since my ETS is June 09 I really don't see an MEB being done.

cashp,

Good to have you here. There are a few routes to an MEB. The most likely would be if your commander directed you for a fit for duty evaluation or if your doctor identifies your condition as failing retention standards. If your condition is not a temporary exacerbation, but you are having a difficult time performing your duties, it sounds to me that you should be referred now to an MEB. Finally, before you separate, you should have a physical where your fitness to separate should be assessed. This can result in a referral to an MEB.

Hope you get some relief from the pain. Please let us know any questions.

I left a message with the PEBLO office but still haven't heard back from him. Is there a tactful way to find out about my possible MEB without the clinic thinking I'm trying to separate through a MEB?? Any suggestions??

cashp,

(1) You could go to AMS (Assignment Management System) and pull a full page surf on yourself to verify if you are coded for a medical evaluation board. You could ask the personnel flight to show you how to pull the surf if you need assistance. I can't remember the steps.

(2) Or, you could go to vMPF to review your records to see if you are still coded for an MEB.

The PEBLO will be able to tell you if the MEB has been initiated by the MTF. My PEBLO called me to advise me in every step of the process before and after the MEB convened.

I would like to think if an MEB has been initiated, you would have been notified by the MTF.

Once you find out if you are still coded for the MEB, you could put in a telephone consult to your PCM, and advise him/her that you would like to follow-up on your possible MEB. You could tell him/her this is all new to you, and you would like to know what step you/they are in the process.

I made a medical appointment with my PCM to discuss the progress of my MEB at his request during a phone call from my requested telephone consult.

These are only my ideas, you have to decide what will work best for you.

Thanks. I'm not coded for anything in AMS so I guess that means they aren't actually doing a MEB.

Did you do a single page surf in AMS? Just because it isn't in AMS, if could be a possibility you are coded.

Did you do a records review rip in vMPF?

You could also ask your unit deployment manager if you are coded too. I worked with our unit deployment manager for ARTS (I believe it's called something like: Air Expeditionary Reporting System). I was required to report on individuals within my unit on their status for deployment such as MEBs, profiles, and etc. The MTF also send profiles to deployment managers too. This would show if you are coded too.

The ARTS was undated montly, and I believe as needed to show individuals status. You may have an ARTS monitor in your section who you could ask.

You could always contact your PCM by telephone consult.

I hope this helps.

cashp. Your ETS really wouldnt stop them from doing an MEB. My original ETS was also Jun 09 and I just went through an MEB and was found 40% recommended for TDRL. MEB was sent off Aug 26. If it comes close to your ETS and there is a chance it will pass before the results come in, I believe they will place you on med hold.

I called my PCM to find out what's going on but no word back yet. I just found out today that I'm having another surgery on my back because the first one didn't work as well as planned. I guess my PCM will decide what to do after that. Thanks for all the help though.

I believe the MTF PCMs wait until after individuals get the needed surgeries and treatment before the MEB convenes. Atleast, this is what happened in my case. I was coded for an MEB, but they did not meet until after I received all my surgeries, and complied with the treatment plan.

It took some time, but it was worth the wait to have everything documented in my case. Hang in there!

I finally talked to the MEB office and the MTF hasn't initiated anything. They flagged my record when my referral for neck surgery came through but said since my PCM hasn't initiated a MEB then I have nothing to worry about right now.

I don't really know. According to the MEB office, they were aware that I had a referral to an off-base orthopedic surgeon and said they needed to take a look at my record to see if my PCM had initiated a MEB. There was nothing from my PCM so the MEB office said I have nothing to worry about. I'm confused and just give up. I guess if I'm going to a MEB I'll find out eventually.

In my case, I asked my PCM if I was a candidate for an MEB. After my PCM said "yes", and I didn't hear anything back from him, I asked him if the process was going to be initiated, and if so, how would it work and when.

I had to figure out how to word my questions to my PCM in order not to offend or appear as a benefit seeker.

Sorry to hear you are confused. Try not to give up on something you may be entitled too.

I thought one of the many task of the PEBLO was to assist the PCM once the MEB initilized. The PEBLO probably will not know anything in reference to your case unless the PCM initiates the MEB. Someone chime in to correct me if I'm wrong.

Good luck with everything.

Generaly PEBLOs are notified by the provider directly communicating with them or by the provider marking the pending MEB box on a profile or DLC.

Whater the case is, if the provider mentioned an MEB to you there shouldn't be a problem with asking him clarify his thoughts on it.

Yes, PEBLOs do assist providers however, we can't read minds.

AFPEBLO,

Thank you for chiming in to clarify.

My AFPEBLO & PCM were very busy with many task, and you are correct, they can't read thoughts. So, individuals have to ask questions to get an understanding of the process, and their case if needed.

I applaued you for taking time to assist us on this forum, and at the MTF.:)

cashp, one thing you might want to look into too see if an MEB is actually being done on you, is check with the case managers located in the MTF. Thats how I found out another MEB was being done on me earlier this year. The case manager was responsible for getting all pertanent medical documents together that was going to be included in the MEB. I actually knew of the MEB being done and started well before my PEBLO contacted me for the briefing.

Rockn is spot on,

my MTF actually assigned a case manager to my case. My case manager called to advise me that she was assigned to my case, and gave me a brief overview of her job, and to explain the involvement she would have in my MEB process.

She called me at home, and at work to follow-up on my medical conditions. Also, she called me before, and after most of my civilian hospitalizations for support.

My case manager advised me in every step of the MEB process, and so did my PCM, and AFPEBLO. My case manager was awesome.
