PDBR and pay question

Can anyone answer this, the ultimate question: After being retired by the PDBR, is there a retro payment for retirement if one took (obviously) severance pay?

I was severed two years ago, and recently was retired by the PDBR. DFAS cannot tell me anything at this point in time other than the Army has sent them my retirement orders.

So if one is retired by the PDBR does DFAS take the entire severance amount out in one lump sum, or can one expect a little bit of pay after the DFAS input?

I am combat related and was not taxed on the severance and no VA recoupment was initiated (NDA 2008)with the severance. Severed in December 2009.

Any thoughts or insights would be appreciated.

Reading your post, you're combat related so you probably won't have to pay the severance back and they DO owe you retro from the date of separation. DFAS has to calculate it after you make your SBP election. I just made my election last week, so we'll see how long it takes them to figure all this out. Also I'd make sure to look at the DOD site to find the PDBR references relative to your personal situation. Have you received your VA Comp yet??

Hey badge4107,

I was in the same situation and I have gotten through most of the pay stuff. Whether or not your injury was combat-related, the VA will recoup your severance. If they haven't started it yet, rest assured they will eventually find the error and they may hit you with a large recoupment all at once. You are probably better off letting the VA know that you received severance but that is your choice. You will not receive double pay, that is, the amount you received in severance will basically be counted as an advance on whatever retired pay you should have been receiving and they will not pay you again. However, there is another piece to this. If you were also receiving VA compensation for the past two years, the law considers that you were receiving 'concurrent receipt' for that period which is not authorized for medical retirees so again, the VA must recoup. I suggest you apply for CRSC as soon as possible as that will offer some relief and put some extra money in your pocket every month once it is approved and if approved you will receive backpay for that. However, and I can't stress this enough, you will likely receive some sort of 'overpayment' from DFAS or the VA in this process and when they catch it, they will want their money back. (Notice I said WHEN they catch it, they will catch it believe me.) If you get some sort of overpayment, don't blow it, invest it or put it in the bank. Consider it a no-interest loan from the government but expect that you will have to pay it back at some point. I know all this because I have been through it.

That is not entirely true. I was medically seperated, combat related, and the VA did not recoup any of the money, per NDAA 2008. I am not as of yet medically retired, so I am not sure what will or will not happen when and if I reach that point. I do know that I had to submit a letter to the VA in order for them not stop recover my VA money and re-issue money that they took. Again, going back to what seems to be inevitable, I am expecting the worst and will hope for the best. To be continued. For those interested, I was directed to write a letter to the VA stating what the NDAA 2008 stated, by a VA representitive. After two years and an issuance of what was taken from me by the VA, the VA has not taken any more or less. I don't know if this helps or makes questions more foggy, but it is what it is. Good luck.

v/r,
Frank

Thanks for your replies.

I spoke with DFAS today, and was told that all the paperwork to process my pay was in. I guess a week from now I will know how this all pans out. I will let you know.
