Pay question - Retired under 20

Hello all,

I apologize if this is a popular topic here, just looking to get clarification on a system that's as clear as mud.

I was medically retired in January. My ratings were 70% DoD and 80% VA.

I understand what CRDP is and I understand that I am not entitled to it since I served less than 20 years TIS.

My question:

My base pay when AD was $3400.
DFAS shows my total retired pay at $2550. (I read something about a max of 75% of base pay, so this number checks out)
I'm receiving about $1850 from the VA.
I just started receiving about $700 from DFAS to make up the difference?

Am I entitled to the $700 difference from DFAS? I was under impression that I would ONLY receive disability compensation from the VA since I was under 20 years of service.

Thanks!

You get whichever amount is higher. Since your pension was higher than your VA disability, your VA pay offsets your pension with tax exempt compensation. Does that make sense?

It makes sense. I've just spent the last six months expecting only the VA pay and this seemed too good to be true.

Thanks! Google has also led me down a rabbit hole to HR 333, which I'm not holding my breath for, but would be incredible.

Yeah it would. I'm coming up on 18 years of active duty. The guys that get put out at 15 for not getting promoted can retire under TERA. Why can't a medical retiree with over 15 years do the same? It's bullshit.

I'm still confused on why my retirement pay is based on 75% of my base pay, versus the normal 2.5%/yr rate. Any insight on that? I had 16 yrs, 10 mos TIS.

This seems to have cleared it up. I guess my retirement pay was calculated on 80% of my high-3, then capped at 75%, per federal law. I think my confusion is why they used the 80% rating from the VA instead of the 70% DoD rating.

AS you said they used your DoD rating, but capped it at 75%.
