If I get med boarded for MDD, when or how does my other conditions get rated?

If I am under 20 years, DoD rates me and so does VA off of MDD then I choose the highest of the two pays a I understand it, but are my other conditions i.e. general anxiety disorder, sleep apnea, tinnitus, back pain rated separate?

Thanks

That's not how it works. The VA Rates everything and that becomes your combined VA rating. The unfitting conditions that the VA rates become your DOD%. So for MDD if you get rated 50% then that would be your DOD% and you would get 50% of your high 36. Then you have one more decision. To accept VA compensation or not. The answer is always to accept it because its tax free. Now the law states that with less than 20 years you can't get both. So if you accept VA compensation that will offset dollar for dollar your pension. So if you were to get $3,000 a month for your pension and VA give you $2,000 then you would get $1,000 from your pension and $2,000 from the VA. Always accept VA compensation. Its never to your benefit to get not accept it. Now if you VA compensation exceeds your medical retirement pension you will only receive your VA compensation.

@Gizzy You can receive both VA compensation and military pension before reaching 20 years of service if you are retired under an early retirement authorization. Not sure what branch you are in but the Marine Corps currently has an active early retirement authorization for those that have served more than 15 years but less than 20.

To comment on that. If found unfit you can apply for TERA. Not a guarantee but if approved they will waive the unfit finding and retire you through TERA which allows you to get CRDP so that you can get your retirement and VA benefits at the same time with certain limitations based on the longevity of your retirement earned.

Thank you. I only have ten years in, though.

Okay than that option is out. The Army ended that program years ago. I am jealous that the Navy and Marines with 15+ active duty years can do that to get all of their benefits without the VA offset.

Correct, Under the current TERA a Marine must be found unfit by the PEB, waive the findings of the PEB, and request early retirement. If disapproved the Marine must execute the disposition of the board and (medical separation or medical retirement). From what I have seen, Marines requesting TERA because of PEB finding of UNFIT usually get approved.

This applies only to Marines. Pretty sure Navy also discontinued TERA option somewhat recently. Marine TERA runs through December 31, 2025 unless otherwise rescinded

When does the VA get involved in your medical discharge? They are telling my grandson to get out and then apply for VA disibility
