I am active duty AF and 2 months ago was diagnose with Multiple Sclerosis. I was in RILO process while doing exams to get the offical diagnosis. Now that I have it, I have not heard anything about initiating a MEB. I read on AFI48-123 that MS is a trigger condiotion that starts a MEB. I have talked to my PCM, and he said that my neurology doctor is suppose to start the MEB. But then when I talk to my neurology doctor, he says the the PCM starts the MEB. This all seems confusing and I dont know who to talk to from here. I was thinking about just switching PCM because my current one seems to not know what to do.

I was diagnosed with MS in January. I am AF Res, flyer. My Flt Doc wrote a I-IRILO back in March and sent it up to HQ AFRC. Just today, 4 months later, I heard back from Med Grp that the decision came back and that I was found unfit for duty. So in my case, HQ had to determine Fit for Duty first. According to my Reserve Med folks, now the MEB starts for me. A NARSUM will be written by the Doc, my Commander will write a letter and answer a questionnaire, along with much more documentation. It is very apparent based on answers to my questions, that my medical unit on my base is not very smart on this whole process?
My question to you from your post is:
Are your PCM and Neurologist military or civilians? My neurologist is a civilian who would have NO idea even what an MEB is?!
Let me know
@fish123 Either one of them can initiate the MEB. My pain Mgmt provider initiated mine originally, but I needed to see another specialist before IDES would open the case. My PCM made the referral the second time around. It is just like any other referral a provider submits; I watched the nurse input mine the second time around.
Frankly, your PCM should do it, IMO. He or she likely has a better picture of all of your conditions and clinical case, even though just one unfitting condition is needed to initiate the process. In you shoes, I would simply bring in a copy of the applicable regulation and discuss it with your PCM (I'm AD Army, forgive my AF reg ignorance).
Sorry to hear about your medical issues. Since they are both pointing the finger at the other doc, may I suggest you talk to the patient advocate. If that doesn't work your CC may help get them off the dime.
