OH. Since I am just now going through the VA "in-processing", I found out that you can get convert you SGLI to VGLI.

If you get that paperwork into the VA within 120 days of discharge, then no medical exam is needed.

PLUS, if you are 100% VA, your VGLI premiums are waived for the first two years - effective date of discharge for two years, and you still have life insurance coverage during that time.

There's more details to this, but if you are 100% VA, I recommend you get your VA VGLI paperwork done within 120 days of discharge.

Free for two years is a good price!

Definitely! I'm all over that. I think VGLI is the only way I can get any kind of insurance with all my disabilities. I know it's expensive when I start getting older but it beats not having anything! There's also DIC but I don't know if you have to be P&T for that. How do you know if your P&T by the way? I didn't see anything from VA that said that. My DoD said permanent retirement but I think that's different right?

After I discharged, the VA sent me a "finalized" IDES rating letter - 22 pages of info.

They wrote very clearly 100% Permanent and Total, with no future exams scheduled.

Now it's not really "permanent and total", as you have to hold that rating for 20 years with the VA.

But the 20-year clock does start ticking....

DOD is different. PDRL means the DOD cannot take your % of rating away from you. Fixed for life.

With the VA, your % can go up - or down - over time.

CW2 that's deep. Well put. NW, so if you are P&T with no future exams then the 20 years issue is moot because how can they reasses your rating if you don't have future exams? Does it show anywhere else that you are P&T? Like on ebenefits or something? My ebenefits still shows "Pending Decision Approval". Guess it doesn't change until VA does a final review I'm guessing.

All I know is that VA ratings are NOT permanent until you have had that issue and it's corresponding rating for 20 years, and no fraud was done by the Veteran on that issue and rating percentage.

Just because I am not scheduled for future exams does NOT mean the VA will NEVER schedule me for an exam. I'm just not on their "rotation" exam schedule.

Ebenefits cannot access your final reports. They are sent to you in the mail.

Ebenefits is not always updated quickly, either. I called the 1-800 VA number every couple of weeks to see if my ratings had been completed. The last time I called them, they said my claim had been closed and the paperwork was on its way via snail mail to my home address. But they had a WRONG address on me, so I had to put a change of address into the system. I then called them back a week after I did that and they re-issued me a copy of my report to my correct address.

And no, they do not get into the details of the report over the phone with you - you get it in your mail box.

Ok i see. Do you remember how long it took to get your final report after the proposed ratings were sent and were the ratings exactly the same as the proposed? I'd hate be all jazzed about my proposed ratings just to find out they change them, know what I mean? On a side note, how was the voc rehab appt? Love to hear how it went!

I just walked in the door and have been responding to you on this thread, so haven't had time to compose my notes to post on the other SSDI/State Voc Rehab/UI thread yet.

Give me a couple hours on that one..... I'm a little tired.

My VA money kicked in three or four months after I discharged. In my case, my retirement monies were offset at that time. But you will get a retro check and CRDP immediately as I understand it.

My proposed rating was the same %, but the "final" claim upgraded four of my VA "IDES" claim issues from not service-connected to service-connected with 0% ratings.

The IDES "proposed" VA claim rating had me at 100% P&T AND unemployable.
The "Final" VA claim rating had me at 100% P&T - but ommitted the unemployable. This is a good thing for me!

The VA also has one medical issue on me that is "pending" a medical exam (who knows when?) and a rating on it AFTER I get the exam and whatever else they may need to do to fix that medical issue.

I got the "Final" initial claim version last month - 4 months after I discharged. But I was on the 1-800 VA number every 2-3 weeks and stayed on top of it. That's how I found out about them NOT having the my correct address.

My ENTIRE VA medical file was also MIS-DIRECTED, too. It was suppossed to go to the VA Regional in Portland, Oregon, but my entire file and the open issue of my one "pending" medical issue/claim was sent to the VA Regional in WACO, TEXAS!!!

Waco, Texas called me last week and they were transferring my stuff to Portland, Oregon. So who know HOW long that one medical issue will take to get to resolution and rating! Probably 2-3 years is what I'm figuring.

Yea, no worries. Take your time on that voc rehab thread. I'm glad everything is falling in line for you. I know you've been in the game awhile. I'm definitely thinking about going the voc rehab route myself. I do want to get my Master's Degree also. Not sure if my GI Bill will cover both though. Degree's are so expensive nowadays!
