Insurance?

so if you get over 30% you get insurance but if you get under you don't right? So if your not broken enough to get insurance and just broken enough for a severance check can you be in the reserves for insurance?

No, medical disability will come with a non-waiverable disqualification for service. This will disallow a transfer to the reserves or an application to the reserves and it would only be fixable by appealing to the BCMR and arguing the discharge itself was incorrect.

The VA will treat all your service connected conditions free of charge.
The VA will treat all your non service-connect medical conditions but charge a co-pay.
At VA rated 50% disability or if you meet a income threshold, your co-pay will be waived.
At VA rated 100% permanent disability your family is eligible for CHAMPVA.

So even if you receive severance, you will be insured. Its possible to receive severance and still be rated P&T by the VA and get family medical insurance.

Thanks for the info, seems messed up, they are starting meb for bad shoulder more than likely just 20% I was going to go to the reserves for insurance but I guess not. Basically I'm to broke to serve but not broke enough for insurance

You need to claim all you conditions with VA, even if they're not considered "unfit" conditions. Some MSCs will write up other conditions in a way that combines those conditions, and, although rare from what I've heard, when PEB reviews, they may add the "combined condition" as unfitting for continued service. You never know.
