my ets is coming up here in October with terminal leave in august. I am currently going trough physical therapy, I have been going since last month. So far I have made no major improvements. I am wondering if they will make me extend or something to continue my therapy. I really do not want to get out and deal with the VA. I have spoken to many veterans including some VA workers and they all told me what I want to do is go trough MEB. I am afraid im running out of time, specially with the budget cuts you don't get to get seen that often. right now I am doing traction, it has hit a plateau. my pain was an 8 when I first started and with my physical "dead mans" profile my pain has been reduced to a 4-6 at times and has made no improvement what so ever. y PA told me that the next step is pain management and if that doesn't work, surgery or MEB. But I understand it is a lengthy process that will put me past my ETS date. I don't want to ETS with all the issues I have and have to deal with the VA. I do not mean to bad mouth the VA but with the current situation and all the veterans seeking help I feel I will be 1: 1million looking for help. I am going to contact the Ft Carson ombudsman to see if they can help out at all.

How long have you been aware of your ETS date?

Good luck getting them to start a med board this close to your ETS. You can try, but your command will most likely just try to force you out through your ETS.

We had a guy start is meb 2 weeks before his ets date. You need to find out what is going on to cause the pain. Request an MRI, you need to start working fast and furious with them. Pain management did not work at all for me, besides it just masks the pain doesn't fix it. If your injuries prevent you from doing your job as a soldier, you need an MEB..

He will need to be referred to MEB, and try and get command to extend or send you to WTU

If you get referred for an meb I don't think command can stop the extension, for my guy it was like hey I'm extending for meb can't stop it.

Hopefully his command doesnt try to fuck him. My command originally just wanted to keep my on limited duty till I EAS'd. Then I read the regulation stating I am required to stay on limited duty till my condition heals, or I am to be placed on a med board. I requested a MEB board a few months into my second term of limited duty.

You just need to go tell your medical section you want to be put on a med board. If they try to shoot you down you need to show them a regulation stating they must put on you on a med board. If you havent had a profile yet it may be difficult to start this process. Just be tactful, respectful and don't stop till you get what you want. Without burning bridges.

That's just how my experience was, I guess they may be able to but I know for this guy they didnt and If they could have they would have haha.

Once your placed on a med board your EAS will be indefinite till the process completes.

yes, that is the current situation. However I spoke to the ombudsman today and he told me he will be contacting my PA to see what he plans to do with me and to do it quick.

I have a similar situtation. I started the MEB process in APRIL 2013. My ETS is AUG 4 2013. Off course I had my terminal leave accepted and already had my orders to go national guard. I have not yet pulled the leave or extended my ETS date. I will do all that when I get my unfit memo this month. (hopefully this month) National Guard orders were deleted as soon as they were notified of my profile.

Since my ETS is close, I was told to medically extend my contract. This adds on 6 months. It is only mandatory until you receive your orders to finally leave. I am at active duty Fort Polk.

All sorts of soldiers, sailors and airmen are discharged at their ETS when they are receiving medical treatment. So the fact that you're getting medical treatment does not require your command extend your enlistment. However, an MEB DOES require they extend your enlistment. Focus on getting an MEB initiated . . .

ED is correct. If you do decide to just ETS you can still claim your issues through the VA. Call your VA rep at your hospital on post. They will set up appointments for you. I did all this before starting to MEB. If they do find something wrong, they also rate you and pay you. It is not the same as MEB because you still ETS.

Now if you do MEB, different story.

Your current medical provider can recommend an extension if they feel you will need to be in treatment greater than your ETS date. They can also recommend a MEB if they feel your condition is not going to resolve within 12 months and allow you to return to duty.
