How does permanent retirement work?

I sent in my letter to the PDBR in the middle of March.

I got out in 2004 with an unfitting condition. I got a military rating of 20% for my unfitting condition and another 10% for a minor condition, NOT unfitting.

I didn't pursue a rating with the VA until 4 years ago and got a 20% rating for my one unfitting condition.

I do get approx $970 a month, but I am not aware that I have retirement. Since my combined military rating is 30% does that mean I have it or do I not have it because I only have 20% unfitting?

If my unfitting rating gets bumped to 30%, does that mean I just get paid an additional 10% or does it include more to have "retirement"?

Thanks in advance for your help!

You are not medically retired, you were given a severance package because your DoD disability rating (unfitting conditions) were 20%.

What is you current VA combined rating? This would be useful information to help determine whether or not your severance pay is being recouped.

If you were able to get your rating adjusted by the PDBR (it would have to go from 20% to 40%), you would be eligible for a medical retirement and potential back payment based upon your retired pay base at the time.

You have stated that you were an E-5 when you got out with 9 years, your approximate retired pay base would have been about $2300-$2500 so 40% of that is $920-$1000.

This is about the same as what you are getting from the VA, so the VA C&P award may be slightly larger to medical retirement and to your advantage when taxes are calculated in.

Because of this, it is not likley that you would see any significant amount of many from DFAS in back pay.

These are only educated guesstimates and the actual numbers may be different.

Thank you so much! That is great info!! I am currently at 20% with the VA

Who pays you the $970 per month? 20% with the VA is only $264.02.
Isn't it the combination of the DoD and the VA? 4 years ago when I got my 20% from the VA, my monthly payments went up. I used to get around $500 a month

I think I need to look back at my records, maybe I have my percentages wrong.

PM somebody your name and ask them to look you up in the white pages. It will say "veteran" or "retired". *Assuming you are Army

If you are Army I'll check for you
