I am 39 years old and completed OSUT at Ft. Benning in December 2011, I am a 19D and was injured in training, I was told to deal with this at my FDS and so here I am, i was asked if I wanted to be MEB boarded by my Dr. I am being seen and treated for arthritis in my right knee and am looking at two surgeries and also an ankle injury as well as been told i have peripheral neuropathy in both feet! I am having a surgery soon and will reevaluate after with my Dr. I would like to know how the process works and what to expect and how long it takes, as well as any idea on how the benefits work!

Any help is greatly appreciated

Dayne, Let me first congratulate you for volunteering for military service at such a senior age. It could not have been easy competing with the kids at "Ft Benning's School For Boys". That said now let me try to take you through some of what you are going to be going through. Biggest questions will be what has been caused or occured in the military, what was a pre existing condition, and if a pre existing condition has it been aggravated since joining. The process is very long and complicated. Oh and all along the way... other people will question your integrity. It's to early to be thinking benifets.......concern your self with the surgries, the physical therapy and recovery. Good Luck

Thank you for the information and I am focusing on hoping they can actually help with some of the problems, I was told the feet are going to stay the same and hope it goes away! My knee is a bigger issue and my ankle is also a serious problem I have been told, It already is frustrating and I have been lucky as far as people questioning my integrity however I am prepared for that as well, I graduated top of my troop in training and earned excellence in armor as well, It speaks volumes at least so far it has, I have completed training that is required of all of us to do and also completed another army school, however I have been told I am dead space and it is getting frustrating or sure, I see my surgeon soon and hope to get the entire ball rolling, I am curious though is there any kind of time frame with this process, I have heard several different kinds of timelines and i am very aware how many people are in this process already with numerous added daily i am sure!

Thank you again

Dayne

What was your injury? Did it occur before you entered active duty or while you were on active duty?

I understand your concern, but remember your within a great community..... THE PROFESSION OF ARMS.... and telling you how long "your" process will take is like declaring the second coming of christ (I know people do,but i'm not that vain). The imporant objective now is to seek treatment and plan recovery, stay positive and don't become intimidated (ASK FOR SECOND OPINIONS) during the process. Good Luck Brother ;)

Yep, predicting the length of the whole process is nearly impossible. That being said, I can tell you that the shortest I have seen is 2 months and the longest was over 2 years. Everyone is different but, currently, the average seems to be somewhere around 6-9 months. Your mileage WILL vary. Especially with surgeries and therapy coming up. From what I have seen, most MEB's are not started until after recovery is complete.

It all occurred while in training, ankle injury still waiting to have final diagnosis, found out I have osteo arthritis and torn meniscus and cartilage in right knee and have periphael neuropathy in both feet!

Thank you for your input I appreciated it.

OK, if all of your conditions occurred while you were on active duty, then your military doctor will initiate an MEB. From your description, you will have medically disqualifying conditions so you will be referred to a PEB. Based on your MOS and grade, it is almost certain that you will be found physically unfit. The PEB will then forward your unfitting conditions to the VA for rating determination. Based on the rating decision, you will either be discharged with severance pay (20 percent or less disabled) or placed on the Retired List for physical unfitness (30 percent or greater disability).

Thank you for your help I truly appreciate it and look forward to more advice as I post more in my progression in this journey!

I have recently been told by a DOD Dr. that he is recommending a Med Board for PTSD. I was previously diagnosed by 2 civilian providers for the same condition. I am Active Duty Army and assigned to a Recruiting BN. I am curious about this whole process. I was given a profile and I am also not allowed access to weapons. All of the Dr.'s I have seen agree I am non-deployable. Could anyone please tell me how this works? Is there anyone out there that has dealt with this process for PTSD? This is obviously combat related and not due to any traumatic experiences prior to me joining. I wasn't sure how to start my own post on here so I am piggybacking on this one.

In the upper right hand corner of every forum section, there is a grey button called "Post New Thread"...click that to start your own.

There is a TON of information here on this site. Just type "PTSD" in the search box and you will get all sorts of great information. Generally speaking, you are in for a long and frustrating process that can sometimes take over a year to complete. Good luck and best wishes.
