Hello to all,

I have a few questions. I reluctantly started the MEB process for Crohns Disease Jan 2011. I am a single mother of 4 and was terrified of being put out of the military. I have 10 years in active duty. I have deployed several times but to now having crohns (diagnosed and colon resection Oct 06). I no longer can deploy and so the process begins. So I saw a JAG lawyer and put paperwork together to go to PEB in San Antonio. Since I wanted to be found fit, I added recommendations from my senior leadership. All NCOERs and pt test are good (even with L5-S1 fusion/laminectomy). My JAG lawyer and PEBLO thought I had a good case and chances of being found fit were good. So I get a phone call from PEBLO about 2 weeks ago saying that my preliminary findings were in and they found me unfit for duty and my documents were being sent for my rating. I was devastated and could only think of my kids.

How does the rating thing work? I have been looking at this site and I see formal PEB and Informal PEB. What are those and how do you know which one your are doing? I have been looking for information on VA rating for crohns disease but can't find any at all. There is just so much information...I am overwhelmed!!!
 
Welcome. I do not have any answers to your questions, but I am confident someone will chime in with the proper info. It is a bummer that they found you unfit. Best case scenariois that they rate you above 30 % to enable you to keep Tricare for you and the children. Was Crohns the only condition that was evaluated?You mentioned the VA rating - are you under the legacy MEB or under IDES (joint DOD/VA medboard)? Once again welcome.
 
Thanks...crohns disease doesn't meet retention standards and is why I am in the MEB process. So the Army is only looking at that but the VA is looking at anemia, migraine headaches, L5-S1 fusion w/laminectomy, epidural inclusion cyst and my crohns disease. I am in the new DES system.
 
Best advice I have for you is to read up on all your conditions in the VASRD. The VASRD is the document the VA uses to rate your conditions. You can find it in the "download" section of this website. Here is a link to a website that I frequent daily to stay informed. Some of our moderators here also make an appearance on this website. The Army MEB is required to cover all medical conditions with full clinical data to include the data from the applicable VA AMIE worksheets. If the MEB does not do this, appeal it and request an impartial medical review. The PEB is required to look at all your conditions and their impact on your fitness. That can't do that if the MEB does not include all the necessary data.
