Got my IPEB results back

20%. Discharge with severance pay.

I was expecting more, but oh well.

FYI my condition is failed back surgery (L5/S1 disc replacement) with nerve damage in my right leg.

That seems pretty low for a back issue. Are you planning on accepting that, or going to a formal board?

Did you have A ROM done and, if so, what was your forward flexion limited to? What VASRD code did they rate you under?

Wow, yikes, 20% does seem low for back. I'm sorry to hear about your failed surgery. I don't wish this back pain on anyone! I hope that further types of intervention can reduce your pain and that over time your nerves get better. That forward flexion is a joke to me. I can't walk a block. Couldn't make it through 1/2 of the commissary yesterday & yet I can reach and touch the floor-almost palms flat! I think one uses hip flexors. My L-1 thru S-1 are jacked w/ radiculopathy. Since my stuff is just starting out-I hope the physicians on the board are competant enough to know that I can't work right now and whatever I do in the future will have limitations. I found that we can be rated on pain too, right? Or is that when there is no causal factor? Anyway, I wish you the best.

It seems low to me, but honestly, this has been a 2-year ordeal that has left me emotionally and spiritually drained, and even though I know I'm forfeiting a possible higher rating that would help in the long run, I'm just ready to throw in the towel and move on.

At a minimum, get your condition rated by the VA. Get smart on how it is rated and ensure it is rated properly by the VA. If the VA rates your unfitting condition at 30% or more, file with the DoD Physical Disability Board of Review under 10 USC 1554a. If that board agrees that you should have been rated 30% or greater, then you will receive retirement vice separation, a huge difference.
