Getting retirement after honorable discharge due to not able to perfprm new PT requirements

I was on A medical profile for the last five years of my 15 year enlistment. When i reached my 10 year mark i was diagnosed with asthma, a bum right knee and degenerative disk disease in my neck. At the time the Air Force had the bike test and passing the annual pt test was no problem with my conditions. The problem started around my 13 or 14 year mark when the Air Force went to the more physical test. I was not able due to my health problems to pass the new test. I was told by my first shirt 3 months before my enlistment was up that i had to pass the test to stay in, but with my waiver i had it made that almost impossible. With a week before i was scheduled to get out my commader told me they were not going to let me re-enlist. He told me i could try and fight the decision, but if I lost i would loose any benefits i was entitled to. So with no where or time at time i had no choice. My doctor said he would do a Med retirement but with a week left his hands were tied. When i got out i did the VA process and got a 40% raiting. Is there any way i can go about seeing if I can get some sort of retirement out of this?

I think your case depends on when the the VA rated you 40% and what conditions were rated. Some conditions are "fitting" and others are "unfitting." The Air Force uses a document called the Medical Standards Directory to determine what is "unfitting."

1. IF your VA rating was done about the time you separated AND
2. One or more conditions rated by the VA are unfitting according to the MSD AND
3. The total of those unfitting conditions is equal to or grater than 30%

You might have a chance with BCMR.

Ultimately the one way you will know is the file a case and wait.

Best wishes

So were do i begin this process any suggestions?

When do the AF state that you could not reenlist, what was your last day you served?

How long after you got off of active duty did you apply for VA benefits?

Were you given any severance pay from the AF?

Reply with those dates, it will make it a little easier to direct you where to go to request a discharge upgrade.

They told me a week before my enlistment was up.

I applied for my VA benifits about 2 months after i got out.

They gave me nothing when i got out but a hand shake.

Thanks

So it seems you were given a straight discharge and not med-boarded out? If that is the case you would need to do BCMR first to have the condition deemed unfitting. I’m not sure if the BCMR can grant medical retirements. But if not, after you get BCMR to change your discharge to medical then you could apply to the PDBR to get a medical retirement.

It’ll be a lot of work! But if you hope to fix this you’ll just have to give it a go.

@gsfowler is my thinking correct?
