Genetics

Good morning,

I am wondering on the questions they ask you about your family history, lets say your family has a history of being diabetic, and you didnt have it when you joined but you develop it while your in the service, is it true the DOD/VA will not give you a % or any kind of compensation bc its considered genetics?

If problems develop 8+ years after entering service, the military owns them. Also, if prior to 8 years, the military has the responsibility of proving that they were not made worse or the onset hastened as a result of military service.

If it was service aggravated genetics should not play a part at all.

a friend of mine developed type 1 diabetes and it runs in his family as well he got 30% from dod and med retired last year after being in for 8 yrs

Thank you guys for your answers! Pitt i know i have talked to you in the past about my gout, It has been so bad they still have me on predisone which has caused me to gain almost 20 pounds in a month. and im using this as an example it hasnt happend

if i gained 20 pounds bc of the meds that were proscribed then i was diagnosed with being diabetic that would be considered service aggravated correct?

Sorry to hear that Senoth. I hope you recover from this and soon. As far as being service aggravated I would say anything would be considered unless they(DoD) can prove otherwise. Don't sweat the small stuff, just focus on de-stressing and bringing the flares under control.

Wish you the best.
