Enlist to National guard 15 years after PEB

First question, I was discharged from USMC and wondering if or has anyone ever been able to get back in to service after getting out in a PEB put on TDRL then taken off TDRL due to a injury falling below 30%? I was taken off TDRL due to rating falling less than 30% but was never told what my Percentage was and just discharged with a severance pay.

Would really like to join the National Guard 15 years later and I know this might be a issue due to my prior injury. I have since recovered from it but I know on paper it looks otherwise and it’s not like I can just get re evaluation by a military doc. What is actually possible for me?

I called the army TDRL HQ and surprisingly they had no answer. They advised me that all the questions I asked were recruiter questions which the recruiter I am speaking with is just as lost for words.

Long story short I just want to know if it will be possible to get back in or if anyone has had luck. I really want to serve again, please any help is appreciated.

Recommend you visit with a USMC recruiter (or other service). They should be able to quickly answer your question.

Please note that if you were discharged and received severance pay, the military has already found you medically unfit for continued service.

Recommend you see a recruiter; he or she would have the appropriate regulations.

My comment about unfit was due to my reasoning that why would a service enlist or reenlist an individual who has already been found to be unfit?

I worked at a MEPS for one year while on a compassionate assignment in Houston and saw many potential recruits denied entry due to preexisting medical conditions. However, like many things, I am not an expert in this matter. See a recruiter.

Recruiter can ask his higher ups and someone can get back to you. Might up being a medical waiver but the meps doc submits that and then you wait. It would be beneficial to get a letter from your doctor stating that the issue is healed and completely resolved and unlikely to cause any issues.
 
Second thought….. What is your RE code on your dd-214? Some RE codes may not be waiverable. If they have you a code for disability then it might prevent you from enlisting.

Excellent advice; I overlooked he had already spoken with a recruiter. I now wonder why the recruiter did not pursue the matter further.

my re code is RE3P and I am still in the beginning stages of this. The holiday is what has been a little hiccup in getting my answers due to people taking off work etc

Yes it possible. I was able to years ago. Talk to a recruiter and see what the waiver process is and what is the chance you can get an approved waiver to get out. Also, check out the Army National Guard and Army Reserves. They will take prior enlisted marines. Don't limit yourself to one branch. Just know that its quite a process if you are going to give it another go. I had to see 3 specialists before getting the waiver and going to MEPS.

He spoke the the TDRL HQ and was told that all his questions were for a recruiter. It doesn't mention that he actually spoke to a recruiter.

Provis you really were able to get back in after a PEB / release from TDRL? What did it take? How did you do this and what should I expect. I wish I had clarity in this. I will speak with the recruiter tomorrow and I really hope for the best.

I seen on many pages that re enlistment after severance is not possible to go active duty ever again. But it doesn’t specifically say anything about joining reserve or National Guard.

I just wish I had a answer so I kinda know what to expect. I really thought the TDRL HQ would know things of this nature but nope.
 
Yes! Wasn't TDRL though. TDRL doesn't mean anything since it converts to PDRL. Back in 2003 I did it. Took 4 months. I am sure everything has changed. I don't remember much since my recruiter did all of the hefty lifting. I was in excellent shape and explained that the issue was resolved and I didn't have any problems with my knee any more. So i was sent to several doctors and they all gave me an approval. Then I went to MEPS and cleared that and signed a contract. The standards to get in and how often they work with you to get a waiver are in direct correlation to the recruiting needs of the military. If they are hurting for numbers you will likely have a better chance of getting a waiver approved than if they are hitting their quota.

A few years later my wife was Direct Commission from a Staff Sargent to a Lieutenant. At that time the Army was hurting for officers. They don't do direct commissions for being an officer anymore. So with everything its about the needs of the service. Find a good recruiter and see what your chances are. If they are not good you can always try or check in every so often to see if anything has changed.
