Does the 180-day Restriction on Hiring Military Retirees into GS jobs affect Medical (temporary) Retirees as well?

Something that was brought to my attention recently, that in March of 2017, a law was passed that restricts military members that are retired to be appointed to a federal position until 180 days have passed since their retirement date.

Does anyone know if this applies to medical retirement as well? I will likely be seperated within a year and will lose medical retirement anyways, but with that I want to be able to be hired for fed jobs now. I think I may contact AFPC and see if I can figure this out.

Yes, I just went through the hiring process with AFPC and the hiring authority had to request and be granted a waiver to hire me even though I was a medical retiree. It went through with no problems for me. If you are trying to go back to a position similar to what you did and/or within the same organization it may be a little more difficult from what I was told. Also, for what its worth, if you are medically retired, not all of your military time will count toward leave and sick pay accumulation. The OPM regs are a little confusing on this when you first read them and make you think you will be credited for all your military time. You'll only get credit for time served in a combat area.

Great, I just keep finding more and more barriers to a successful life, post military. I am also being taken off medication, so I will almost 100% be changed to a medical seperation and lose all those benefits while still having the effect of the diagnosis they gave me (suspending my clearance) and now this blocking my ability to get federal work during the short window of time that I will have a higher hiring preference. I feel like I just want to say sooo long to the federal government and go learn a trade or something.

One thing to add, if you are a disabled Veteran with a 30% or greater rating, you are given 104 hours of leave for medical appointments/treatment related to any conditions that you are rated for. This is during your first year of employment.

Helps make the transition and adjustment to VA healthcare easier.
