DOD ratings

The VA will calculate percentages based on each service related condition you claimed. The DOD will only calculate those ratings that are deemed unfit for military service, also known as your referred conditions.

I claimed 17 items, but only have 1 referred condition. Your retirement pension percentage will be based on the rating of this referred condition if you get a 30% rating or more up to 75% of your high 3 pay.

Hope this helps!

So if I had a referred condition plus 5 addendums, the total of those rating based on the va math is what my DOD percentage should be?

So addendums to my refereeing condition do not count?
For example.. my original referring condition was a shoulder injury but I had an addendum for migraines that were also a unfitting condition and signed a narsum for, along with 4 other narsums.

Good info. Thanks!

Quick question though: Your DOD rating is based on your unfitting condition. Got it. Can we claim our other conditions to be rated for disability from the VA?

I have Myasthenia Gravis, and I suspect it might be enough to get me medically retired. I also have varicose veins in both legs, and two torn rotator cuffs, but I'm worried that after my DOD rating, I'll be left with nothing for my other issues. Is that accurate?

If all of your conditions are unfitting, your dod and VA ratings would most likely match. I highly doubt every condition you have is going to be unfitting though.

Yeah, I don't think my rotator cuffs will be unfitting, but the varicose veins might be. Thank you!

The varicose veins is a rention issue per the MSD, but they have to cause you constaint pain and prevent you from working out to really be rateable.

They do cause constant pain, and elevating my feet doesn't provide much if any relief. I've already had surgery on both legs to try to fix them (and I'm sure they'd be willing to try more) but it's definitely something that I think could be considered unfitting. Is there some sort of exam that you have to go to before your record goes up to the PEB, or do they just take the record as-is?

From what I have understood and I am no expert in the subject so do your own research. But the Navy is a little different. Yes DoD ratings are only based on referred conditions, that ARE found unfitting. The DoD is supposed to match the VA ratings. You will get a a VA ratings for every condition based off the DBQ, so that means you can have a claim/condition that they dismiss or get 0%. If you get a 0% the VA recognize that you have the condition and will provide treatment for that condition after you leave the service as long as it was service connected.

How the Navy is different from other branches and again check the reference. I checked them out when I went through the process and from what I read, the Navy doesn't allow you to add unfitting referred condition after the NARSUM has been submitted and you get your fitting/unfitting determination back.

For example as I was going through the process, I was still seeing doctors to figure out what was happening in other symptoms that I was having. The doctors discovered a serious medical condition. But because I was so far along in the process that I was unable to add it to my referred conditions for the DoD. I could however file a VARR with the VA. From what I understood was that this is unique to the Navy, and if I was in the Army I could have added that condition.

In the end I was told that I could restart the whole process but that wouldn't be wise. So I listened to my council and went forward with the PEB. And the VA found me 100% and the DoD found me at a high % as well. So the condition wouldn't have gotten me any more in retirement and I never filed a VARR. But I can see how this could severely affect someone's life. Best thing I can say is do your own research if you are able and make sure you have a competent lawyer and trust their judgment. In my case I tried to research myself but it wasn't feasible to give it the attention that it needed so I listened to others on this board and got legal counsel. This process is hard and to expect our soldiers and sailors to figure all the ends and outs is a very high bar for the most healthy and intelligent person. I know that I would have been able to do it alone, let the experts do your heavy lifting and you can focus on your health and family.

Wow, thank you for this. This is very helpful, and I appreciate the guidance. I'll definitely do tons of research, and will do the best I can to get through this process.

That's comforting to know that I'll be given 0% for my other conditions because the way it sounded was that my unfitting conditions would be all that are rated, so I appreciate the clarification.

Thank you again. I'm so glad to have found this forum, and it wouldn't function without generous folks like you.

No problem, I read a lot of Jason Perry's post and I believe that is where I found out the information about the Navy. But he has a lot of post breaking everything down much better than I could ever do.

And a correction to my post above, it was supposed to say,"I know that I wouldn't have been able to do it alone, let the experts do your heavy lifting and you can focus on your health and family."

It just takes me a bit to write and it's not as accurate as it once was.

Navy nailed it on both comments. The search function on this forum is your friend. If you searched for "how does the DOD rate" or DOD rating, you would be reading for days.

I am glad you found some answers to your questions. You are definitely not alone in this!
