DoD and VA Award

Just medically retired March 13 and confused......someone at VA told me I would continue to get the VA award for disabilities that weren't under my DoD......
My DoD is 60% Permanent
-50% ptsd
-20% low back
=60% per their weird math
My VA.....
-50% ptsd
-50% sleep apnea
-20% low back
-10% nerve damage left leg
-10% tinnitus
So take out PTSD/low back, I would still be 60% VA with the sleep apnea, nerve damage and tinnitus?
Also, I'm currently getting 80% VA until my DoD kicks in as I retired March 13.
Just want clarification if someone is in the same boat. Will I get and VA Award along with my DoD payment? Thank You!

Unless you have 20 years in and eligible for regular retirement you will only receive VA OR DOD- not both. usually the one that is more advantageous is VA as it is non taxable. your VA rating is everything that you were rated for the 80%.

Ok perfect.....DoD is $3,552 at 60% (E9) and VA is $1,895, so I was told I'll get the DoD and it's permanent so tax free......I have under 20 yrs AD

Look into switching your CRDP into CRSC during open enrollment as well. Make sure you switch your SGLI to VGLI and sign up for VADIP.

In order to qualify for CRDP as a CH 61 retiree one has to have 20 AD for regular retirement or 20 good years for reserve retirement and meet the age requirement (reserves). You stated you have under 20 years AD.

CRSC does not require one to have 20 years AD or 20 good years.

You will waive retired pay (if you choose to receive VA comp) dollar for dollar in the amount of VA compensation received. It appears you would have residual retired pay (i.e., remaining) after the VA offset. You would also receive your VA comp.

DoD pay is not "tax-free". A portion of your pay will be offset by the VA amount but the rest will be taxable.

OK perfect....I was told my DoD is tax free due to being combat related. It was given the "V4" which I have no idea what that means, but the PEBLO and RSO told me that. Thanks everyone for the input and it's much appreciated. I clearly did zero research haha.

I'm sorry, It was V1/V3 on my 199 from the PEB, which I signed. Don't know why V4 was stuck in my head. Thank you for the reply Sir.

My apologies. You didn't mention the combat relation in your question. You said due to the "permanent" status that it would be tax so I clarified.
