I just received my DD form 2656 to begin filling out. My admin dept wants it done by tomorrow but I am confused and having trouble filling it out. I am 3 years in separating medically from Navy. I have instructions on filling it out but it’s still very confusing. Considering I’ve only been in 3 years, what do I elect on the form?

PM me tomorrow morning and I will look at a copy of my 2656 on my work desktop.

Hello,

There are instructions that should be part of the form you received, although I can see where some areas might be confusing. I was surprised to see your question since the Army personnel office would complete the form for regular retirees after an interview (I was overseas just prior to when I retired and I don't remember any CH 61 cases being processed for an European "out.")

I noticed from one of your previous posts that you are in the Navy; each service has their own way of doing things. In my opinion, what you have been asked to do is tantamount to going through the chow line and being asked to cook your own food. (Senior Personnel Sergeant was my secondary MOS.)

Guardguy11's reply in the morning should be helpful.

Good luck,
Ron

Just got into my office. I filled out the DD2656 with a retirement specialist at the MPF. They brought it up on their computer and walked me through it step by step. Granted, they are trying to sell you on the different insurance stuff, but they should still walk you through this form. As a matter of fact, there is a specific block for certification that someone needs to fill out, which is why they prefer to do it with you.

I would call your personnel office and ask for a retirement person.

Thank you. Admin told me they would help me fill it out but said they aren’t knowledgeable with those forms. And they told me it had to be done today so hopefully we get it right.

Hi,
Yes I have instructions but still finding it a bit confusing and yes I am navy. My command doesn’t work with medical separations very often I guess. Maybe I can get some help on figuring it out and I definitely agree with your statement.
Thank you

Was your visit with admin successful today?

Hello. I received my DD Form 2656 the other day. I am trying to fill it out and I have questions. I tried calling DFAS as the letter told me to but I was told to call my local retirement personnel. When I pushed and told them I left the AF 15 years ago and I was retired through the PDBR they gave me the number to the board. That number just rings without an answer.

I hope someone here might be able to help me. The two questions I have are:

1. They asked about the amount the VA pays me. As with most people, the VA pays me for more than what I was originally discharged for. Do I just give the payment amount for everything from the VA or just the part of what the review board retired me for?

2. Do I have to get this signed by a witness?

Recommendations:

Item one: Indicate the current amount of the monthly VA compensation you currently receive.

Item two: DFAS says, "
As you prepare for retirement, it is very important to seek counseling from your Branch of Service on your options.

First, you should review DD Form 2656: Data for Payment of Retired Personnel.

The DD 2656 offers brief instructions regarding election options and requirements, but you also need to consider other implications. Please make the time to carefully review information about SBP Elections and Eligible Beneficiaries.

When you have made your decisions and are signing Form DD2656, please keep in mind:

  • The form must be signed prior to your retirement date
  • Your witness must sign the document on the same date as you
  • If a spouse’s signature is required, it must be on or after the date of your signature, but also before your retirement date
  • The notary witnessing the spouse’s signature must sign the document on the same date as the spouse"

Thank you. I have the form filled out and completed to the best of my ability. I will see what they make of it.

Forgot to update this. DFAS sent me an outdated form. I did not realize it at first until I spoke to the SBP rep at my local base. He told me I should be using "Disability" as my retirement type but it was not on the form. I found the updated form online and got it sent in.

Should start getting my retirement pay at the beginning of August. Still waiting on the back pay but I was told it is almost finished being calculated.

I did not read all your previous posts, but it is my understanding you had a correction to records via the PDBR.

With limited info available, I should point out that any retro retired pay (back pay) is reduced by the amount of the VA compensation you receive.

Example: Retired pay = 2500 ; VA comp = 3000
2500 minus 3000 = zero retired pay

If you qualify for CRDP, some of that reduction would be restored via that program. CRSC replaces some or all of waived retired pay; see

I have read on other post about the back pay would be reduced due to the VA compensation. I have an idea on how much I should get. I do not qualify for CRSC.

I am just glad that after 3 years and 4 months this process is almost over. Everyone on here has been a great help and I want to say thank you for all the info and advice I received.
