DOD is 80% all combat related, TDRL
VA is 100% (legacy combat code 1?)
Estimate for DOD retirement is $4500 ish
For VA was $3000 ish (has spouse and 3 kids, so a little more)
Based on what I read in other answers, my belief is as follows (working on the estimates above)
1) he doesn't have to elect anything- he will get $3000 from VA and $1500 from DOD. 2)DOD is normally taxes, but won't be because it is all combat related?
3) he could apply for CRSC. The max total of everything (if he got it), would be appx $5500 (which is what he would have gotten if this was a 20 year retirement?)
He has 14 years, 7 months.
Thanks for your time and for all the great info on the forum. This is such a confusing time. It is good to know we aren't alone!
My husband is 100% va and just got rated 30% from dod medical retirement.I wonder how long it will take for the dod to put in the paperwork for tricare my son needs surgery asap.

Everything sounds about correct. CRSC is not automatic so you must apply for it. Often dependents are not added to the VA C&P so make sure your husband completes a 21-686c.

Your husband must make sure his dependents are in DEERS, and then select the Tricare option desired. He can call the DMDC Support Center at 1-800-477-8227
called DMDC they are already in Deers from the Va rating, called finance and deers they both said they are not showing anything yet.it could take months we do not have.
Update.i got his corrected dd214,orders for retirement .took the to a retirement officer on base whom put everything into hrc i think its called.just wanted u to know he has been 100% p and t from va since 2008 put in recarachterization of meb in 2014 so it took to years to give a retirement rating of 30% from dod.was told he can not get retirement because he gets va of 3300.needless to say this retirement from dod was back dated from 2005.So now i guess i should apply for CRSC. Confussed to any back pay or next steps.he served less than 20yrs.OIF vet.
Technically, this is wrong- he gets retirement, just that the DoD Retirement is offset by VA comp, so he gets the greater of the two, except for if he is awarded CRSC (in which case he will get partial or complete restoration of offset monies).

Sounds pretty close to my numbers. I was 4732 DOD. I am also 100% VA with 3 dependents which comes out to 3268.12. My remaining DOD take home every month is 1156 after they take 307 off the top for survivor benefit plan. Hope this helps.
