Bad commanders letter, need advice

I had posted before, the thread before this one, that I had written my own letter. While it was not detailed enough I made some changes another one (also posted) was turned in. So today I find out the letter was turned in...its bad. Even the MEB guy at the clinic said it was not detailed at all and did not follow the proper format.

Please give me advice on what I can do for this. I have a meeting scheduled with my MEB liason on Monday so I need to know if I should include a letter and what kind/format.

Sorry for the crappy black over it...MS paint and no time.

Did they supply you with an example to follow?

I followed the example, my supervisor did also (which he just answered right after the example question a 1 sentence answer) but my commander didn't. Like I said even the MEB liason sgt told me he did not follow the format that AFPC sent out. Its bad in format, its bad in content.

Have the Meb Sgt to tell him to get off his @$$ and follow the correct format and that they need more info or it will come back. Blame it on the process.

A few things happened today. Had my first briefing with my MEB Sgt here and everything is ready to be turned in. I'm not happy with the half-assed commanders letter in the wrong format with 0 details but its going forth anyway. What Im going to do is send in the commanders letter I wrote myself, if you guys think that would be a good idea. Its got all the details and the correct format I need but not sure if it would hurt ir help.

Also, I have to write a letter of exception as they called it. Its where I get to write a letter to go along with my package. Has anyone done this yet or have a suggestion as to what it should include? Got 3 days from today and its being sent.

Just from my own experiences with a bad NMA from my command, there isn't to much you can do about it. If the format is incorrect the board will probably reject it. so you want to make sure your command follows the format. I wrote a letter explaining what was the problems i had, they read mostly what the command had to say, I ghost wrote my first one, and my command decided to write their own and also add mine. So it went up saying i was good at my job but out for medical appointments and then at the bottom it says my command questions medical. So mine was all messed up. But i know if it's not in the right format i have heard the board will reject it. Just food for thought

I wrote my own too, like I has stated, from an example here. Mine was highly detailed and stated WHY I cannot perform WHAT duties...etc Once I saw what I had wrote and what my supervisor had wrote (or lack there of) I called to my First Shirt right away. He said the commander will do his research and make a letter.

SO now, as I am typing this, I am having a extreme amount of confusion and anxiety. I called up the commaders secretary to schedule a meeting with him and was transfered to my First Sgt. I informed him of what I want to do and he said its all ready been written and its fine but I can meet with the commander if I so choose anyway. I have people here telling me now that they are not happy with me wanting to discuss this with the commander and how it could be more problems than its worth. I was told by many people that the letters hold a lot of weight and mine doesn't look good in my favor, at all.

oh what to do....

DEFINITELY meet with your commander!

I myself sat down with my commander to let him know how my knee affects my ability to work. As we all know your Commander does not see you in action working all the time, so they may have no idea what it is you are really going through. At the end of my meeting with my Commander I had expressed my wish to be separated, and when he wrote up his letter it had everything in there that I had explained to him.

I believe that had I not sat down with my Commander, my MEB would have turned out completely different. (In a bad way)

Good advice. You need to communicate with your commander. Otherwise, how is he going to know what you want? Just use your chain and always be professional. Take things up the right channel and they will be more willing to assist you.

Well due to other conflicting appointments, I had to cancel my meeting....I spoke with my LO and theres nothing I can do now except get letters from other people, like character statements I guess.

Also apparently made the mistake of trying to help someone out and compare commanders letters. The other member did not recieve theirs yet and called to inquire, the inqury made it to the first sgt who called my supervisor. Needless to say I am now forbidden from talking with said member at all about it. Rather sad because said member is most likely going to get the shaft like myself....

I hope that the IPEB and such can see through the "I dislike this NCO" and look more at my medical issues, the reason Im undergoing this MEB in the first place.

Sounds like your Commander is a poor leader. Sorry to hear that.

For what its worth, letters like the one you posted would tend to carry little weight with the PEB. That is, it won't help, but there is not enough information to make it hurt you either. Ideally, you would have a full explanation of your limitations from your commander, but not having that is not the end of the world. You can, like you mentioned, gather letters from co-workers/supervisors. I would caution you, though, a "character statement" is not what you need. You need specific observations about how your condition(s) impact the performance of specific duties. That is what is most helpful to the PEB in making a decision and will help your case.

Good luck!

Thank you for posting, that is very reassuring! I said exactly that at what to write, how my performance is affected by my conditions. I was so worried that this poorly written adverse letter would carry some weight, but if anyone would know it would be you.
