Can someone tell me how you apply for VA IU? Is it as simple as opening a claim on ebenefits? My VA doctor agrees that i have to many challenges to continue working. I work now but it's very rough on me and i am applying for disability retirement with them too. I meet all the rating guidelines. I am going to visit my VA physician on Thursday and he is wanting to help me. I am not sure what i should ask for. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Are you working with a veteran service organization(VSO)? If not I would recommend seeking one out, they can assist you with filing any paperwork that you need not only for IU but also any appeals that may arise. Good luck

Thanks, i have tried to call but the VSO i work with..Amvets seem to never be in the office. I am not sure what to do. The Regional Office is 6 hours from my house. It's frustrating.

The application is VA Form 21-8940 and is not that difficult to fill out. The respondent burden to complete the form is 45 minutes. (review, gather information and complete).

Section 7 of the form is for you to fill in what service connected disabilities prevent you securing or following any substantial or gainful occupation. This section is quite small on the form and you may also want to use VA Form 21-4138 which allows to to make a statement in support of a claim. There is plenty of room on the form to substantiate why you feel you meet the standard for IU.

Here is a link to the standards for you to review http://benefits.va.gov/BENEFITS/factsheets/serviceconnected/IU.PDF

Wounded Warrior Project (WWP) has great benefits liaisons that can assist you if the claim is overwhelming or you do not feel confident.

You can register for the WWP here: http://www.woundedwarriorproject.org/programs/wwp-registration.aspx

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to reply.

Thank you, i will fill it out tonight. I plan to ask my VA doctor for a letter outlining my disabilities and why i need the IU rating. I think that would help. Thanks for the good info!
