What are the positives and/ or negatives of self referring to the SARP for alcohol abuse to help cope with pain. I am already diagnosed with MDD due to chronic pain and on antidepressants as well as going to pain management. I’m just not looking for it to become a problem.

The positive is that the behavior from mixing lots of alcohol with antidepressants or just from too much alcohol does not become a legal problem.
Second it does not become a health problem. Excess alcohol intake kills many people, most slowly (disease) and others fast (accidents...).

The downside is that your problem will probably become public knowledge. But getting it our in the open is probably worth that risk.

Choose life!

New procedures allow for self-referral and treatment without command knowledge, if the condition is only alcohol, there are no adverse actions (DUI, etc) and you do not require a higher level of care above outpatient. Under these conditions, it can be treated the same as any other BH condition.
