Advanced Osteoarthritis of right knee

I've been diagnosed with advanced osteoarthritis of my right knee. I was told my options were, go to physical therapy to try and strengthen the leg up and get a medial unloader brace for my knee to cut down on some of the pain that I am having. My other choice is a full knee replacement. My problem is, I'm only 40 and don't quite want to have a full knee replacement yet. I've been in the AF for 15 years. Has anyone ever heard of anyone getting MEB for advanced osteoarthritis? Thanks in advance.

flrdnk,

I am currently going through an MEB for Osteoarthritis in the joints in my feet. However I did have both of them fused. I have also been diagnosed with it in my right knee. I have 12.5 years active duty and the doctors have told me that I will probably require knee replacements at 40 if I where to continue to do impact excercises.(which I cant do anyway). As for me walking causes severe pain. But my answer is yes. However the Army Fitness standards state if it interferes/ or severely hinders you from being able to accomplish your duties. Hope this helps some. There is a regulation for fitness for the AF. You can find it here on this site. I would look it up for the AF and see if it states the same. Good Luck to you!

Yes. I am currently under PEB x 168 days for bilateral knee Moderate osteoarthritis. My legs were slightly bowed and the arthritic changes are greater on the inside of the joint. I had High Tibial Osteotomy on both to put the weight on the outside of the joints. I don't know if this would apply to your situation, but it helped me some. I was not offered knee replacement which I would gladly take. Check out my post. You may find some helpful info. Good luck with the knees.

I am currently am on a peb for osteoarthritis due to tearing my Acl and meniscus twice I also have a grade IV tear of my Chondromalcia. I have had and ACL reconstruction, 2 menisectomies, and microfracture surgeries but do to all the arthritic changes a knee replacement is my last option but due to being only 24 no doctor will give me one

I would like to know how you guys come out.
I was recomended to the MEB about 10 days ago for Bilateral osteoarthritis of my hips and knees.
I have had surgery on both hips. (metal parts) in the last 6 months
Just had Orthovisc(spelling?)injected into my right knee
I am scheduled for half a knee replacement on my left knee(more metal parts) next week
just had cortisone injection in one ankle for what is being diagnosed as bilateral Tarsal tunnel.
Left shoulder scheduled MRI
and to top it off I have been using a CPAP for the last three years for sleep Apnea.

I have 28yrs for pay with 17 active and am AGR, I had just passed the Air force PT test with an 85, and the Army PT test with 274 (joint unit) last June 09
and my knee was really starting to hurt so went in to have it checked. I have now been on convalescent leave for over 6 months and due for more surgery.
osteoarthritis is a bitch! (I am 48) its like a house of cards.. one day a few aches and pains and than poof....
I kind of figure that I am going to be put out, just don't know for sure how and that's what I hate.
Good Luck with your MED issues and get better

Ron,
Sounds like you have been playing lineback in the NFL without pads and cannot sleep properly. I wish you well and am sorry to see the military lose 17 years of service and experience. NCO's with those credentials are becoming very scarce and are difficult to replace quickly. Good luck with your future.

Does anyone know if a High Tibial Osteotomy indicates an automatic MEB? I was just informed that the Dr's want to do a High Tibial Osteotomy on my right knee. I also have some avascular osteonecrosis on the femural condyle at the knee joint. My Dr. told me that I would probably have to have a MEB done with that type of surgery. Any information will help on how the total process works. Thanks.

You should check your service medical retention standards to see if your conditions fail retention standards - if they do, the MEB will evaluate all conditions. In a nutshell, once the MEB is complete your case will be sent to the PEB for adjudication - they are the grand arbiters as to whether or not you are fit or unfit for duty.
