30% DOD, 90% VA - Question

I do not have my 199 back yet but was told over the phone that I had a rating of 30% DOD, 90% VA. I am trying to figure out how much that will be but cant seem to get the calculator on ebenfits to work on my computer.

When I calculate DOD 30%, is it 30% of the base pay I will ETS with or is it 30% of the 36 month average? I keep seeing 36 month average online but have no idea how I would know that.

I am tracking the VA's 90% should be $1743.48.

Last question... What if the VA's 90% is higher than the DOD's 30%? Does that essentially mean I will receive DOD 30% untaxed?

Virtually everyone now will be high 36. This is the average of the highest 36 months of base pay. Those with a very old DIEMS date may be eligible for a different calculation instead. The high 36 helps even out swings by a sudden demotion at the end of service. Its obviously very hard to calculate, especially when you factor in COLA adjustments, so most people just use their current base pay to estimate. The 30% is also limited by length of service, so if you have over 12 years of service, the % will be higher. When you receive the 199 all these calculations should be done for you.

VA 90% compensation will depend on dependent information.

You will always receive VA compensation first. It is untaxed. The DoD pay will be reduced by the amount of VA compensation. If there is some left over after, DoD will pay the difference, taxed. Most receive only VA compensation. That reduction can be undone if you are eligible for concurrent receipt through CRDP (20 years of service) or CRSC (combat related injuries).

Ahhh. I understand. 90% VA is $1,743.48 according to the tables on the VA website (90% veteran only). So technically since the VA 90% is greater than the DOD 30% ... I'll receive the $1,743.48 untaxed?

I think that's right. If I'm still getting confused I'll just wait for the paperwork to come back.
