if i am med discharged with 10 percent disability does the VA take care of me for life? As far as health insurance goes I will not really need that correct...Just for my wife and child which the VA will not cover because I am not med retired. Is this correct?

OEF, OIF veterans are eligible for five years of medical care through the VA at no cost. Obviously, service-connected conditions provide more benefits such as travel pay and care for as long as the condition or any related residuals exist. But after the five years, 10% is not going to get you much in the way of covered medical care or insurance. Any veteran is eligible for VA care but being under 30% does not really provide much. You should really check out VA website.

Also it'll be so hard and long of a wait to be seen that its best to seek health care else where

Funny thing, I called to make an appointment at the VA with my PCM yesterday. I was told she didn't want to see me until April. I was given the impression you can't make appointments, you need to go to the ER.

i havent had any trouble making appointments, call them up and thats it.

Jeep Freek...you should have said, "Well, um...I'm growing a third arm and don't think it's normally and would like to be seen sooner than April." :) I've had not so good experience with primary care either...I only go once a year for my check up to VA PCM...any other issues I use Tricare and private practice--much better care.

Chris, is 10% your total VA rating or just the Army rating? If your total VA rating is 50% or more, you are covered medically through the VA for everything, not just claimed conditions. I am not sure about your family. If you are below 50%, they only cover the claimed conditions.

I do not know my ratings yet. I am only under the impression that is what I will get for a knee injury that required surgery.

to caveat on the converstation, am i understanding that 100% disability is the only situation in which your family is provided health care?

I understand that to be true...however, the thing I didn't know until I sent in my CHAMPVA paperwork is that if your dependents are TRICARE eligible, they are not eligible for VA coverage.

...and this is a valid statement.

To be eligible for CHAMPVA, you cannot be eligible for TRICARE/CHAMPUS and you must be in one of these categories:
  • The spouse or child of a veteran who has been rated permanently and totally disabled for a service-connected disability by a VA regional office, or
  • The surviving spouse or child of a veteran who died from a VA-rated service-connected disability, or
  • The surviving spouse or child of a veteran who was at the time death rated permanently and totally disabled, or
  • The surviving spouse or child of a military member who died in the line of duty, not due to misconduct (in most of these cases, these family members are eligible for TRICARE, not CHAMPVA).
Best Wishes!
