Need alittle help here please.

1. 2860
2. 6 years 9 months
3. 90%
4. 3255, 100% 2 dependent children under 18
5. 90 CRSC
6. PDRL
Hello,

1. 6.75 yr AD x 2.5% = 16.88%
2. 2860 x 0.1688 =482.77 longevity portion of retirement pay
3. 482.77 will be the CRSC

CRSC cannot exceed the longevity portion of retirement pay. The 90% approved CRSC rate would be much more than 482.77

Thanks for the information Ron. But I am not quite sure what you mean by the last part of your reply. Can you elaborate for me.

Yes. You provided all the info I suggested be provided to allow for an accurate computation. It turned out that in your case the computation was simple.

I could see that the 90% CRSC approval amount was much more than the longevity portion of retirement pay; consequently, I said “The 90% approved CRSC rate would be much more than 482.77.”

CRSC for CH 61 retirees is the lesser of
—dollar amount of longevity portion of retirement pay, 482.77
OR
—dollar amount of approved CRSC rate. That rate mirrors the rates in the VA compensation tables—90% with your dependents is more than $1000. $2000.

The rates are at Veterans Compensation Benefits Rate Tables - Effective 12/1/18 - Compensation <—-LINK

90%, no spouse, 2 children under 18 = $1,935.62 + 76 = 2011.62

And once again I'm not the brightest, so I should expect the 480 and not the 2000.

You are correct. CRSC can never be more than the longevity portion of retired pay. It can be less though in rare cases, where the approved CRSC rate (dollar amount) is the lesser.

Thanks again, your help is greatly appreciated!

How long does it take the good folks with CRSC to adjust your comp once DOD has made one permanent and the DOD portion changed? I know crsc should go up some based on calculations and per the atty that helped me. This month, today, I got the lowered DOD pay, but no change to CRSC. Currently on hold for over an hour hoping to reach someone.
Thanks!

Hey guys! I've been going through the thread here trying to keep up with the math. I've tried multiple devices and browsers but cannot get the VA calculator flash plug-in to work at all. I did find a really long PowerPoint and was able to get this far before hitting a wall. Any help finishing the math would be greatly appreciated.

Second quick question for those already receiving CRSC, my CRSC decision letter is dated 22 APR 19. Any idea on how long it might take to kick in? I've also been told that I'll get back pay from the first full month after my retirement which was November 2018. Does this come separate or typically once first payment kicks in? Thanks in advance.

1. My High-36 (H36): $3413.20

2. Chap 61 retiree. Retired as E6 with 10yrs 8mo AD

3. DoD disability 70% - VA disability 100%. Currently receiving VA payment of $3630.36/month

4. Retired Pay Based (RPD) on Disability (DoD?) $3413.20 x 0.70 = $2389.24

5. CRSC letter acknowledges 90% service-connected, combat-related

6. I ballparked my AD time as 10.75 for Service Multiplier(SM) and got
10.75 x 2.5% = 0.27 (0.26875 was actual number)

7. Retired Pay Based on Years of Service (YoS): 0.27 x $3413.20 = $921.56

8. RPD - RP for YoS = CRSC Offset: $2389.24 - $921.56 = $1467.68

I guess it would probably help to know that I'm married with 3 kiddos under 18. Just hit me I left this out looking over other posts.

Can you please help me figure this out.
High 36 - 2399.37, I think
8 years 8 months service, retired as e4 with spouse and 4 children
70% army, 90% VA and 70% CRSC
I currently get 2326.62 in pay every month from VA for my 90% disability with dependents

Hey Jason,

I've attached the PowerPoint I used to get as far as I could. Maybe you'll be able to take it to an end result. Please let me know how it goes. [ADDED BY MODERATOR: THAT POWER POINT PRESENTATION WAS CREATED LONG BEFORE A CHANGE IN THE COMPUTATION FORMULA/LAW, EFFECTIVE 1 JAN 2013 FOR CH 61 RETIREES WITH LESS THAN 20 YEARS AD.] Ron

Hello John,

A. 3413.20 x 70% = 2389.24 DoD retired pay minus VA offset of >3000 results in zero residual (left over retired pay)
B. 10.667 AD years x 2.5% = 26.7% multiplier
C. 3413.20 x 26.7 = 911.32 dollar amount of longevity portion of retired pay (CRSC cannot exceed this amount)
D. CRSC @ 90% using the charts in VA compensation tables is far more than 911.32
E. CRSC for CH 61 retirees with <20 years AD is the lesser of
1. Dollar amount of longevity portion of retired pay
OR
2. The amount for the approved CRSC percentage using the rates in VA comp tables (e.g., 90% married with 3 kiddos under 18)

Based on the info you provided, your CRSC will be roughly 911.32 and you will also receive your VA compensation.

Notes: The formula for computing CH 61 CRSC for those with <20 yrs AD was changed by law effective 1 Jan 13. The power point presentation is old and obsolete.

Additionally, the DFAS calculator had not been updated since 2014 and had several flaws.

Jasonjeda12,

Based on your info your CRSC will be $520.66. You will also receive your VA compensation.

1. 8.667 yrs AD x 2.5% = 21.7% longevity multiplier
2. 2399.37 x 21.7% = 520.66 dollar amount of longevity portion of retired pay. CRSC cannot exceed this amount (longevity dollar amount).
3. 2399.37 x 70% = 1679.56 disability retired pay which is reduced to zero by VA compensation in excess of 2000 (i.e., more than gross ret pay)
4. CRSC @ 70% using the charts in VA compensation tables is far more than 520.66
5. CRSC for CH 61 retirees with <20 years AD is the lesser of
a. Dollar amount of longevity portion of retired pay <----this is the lesser in your case.
OR
b. The amount for the approved CRSC percentage using the rates in VA comp tables

For Future Visitors: CRSC Estimates for Chapter 61 Retirees

All
of the following is needed for an estimate:
  1. High three average base pay OR gross retired pay on DFAS RAS (indicate which is provided) Example: 3500 from DFAS RAS
  2. Precise number of active duty or active duty equivalent years and months. Example: 9 years and 3 months
  3. DoD Disability percentage Example: 60% DoD
  4. VA percentage; the amount; and number of dependents by category Example: 100%; 3400; spouse and 3 children under 18
  5. Approved CRSC rate OR expected CRSC rate Example: 80% approved CRSC
  6. Indicate if any of the following apply: have 20 good years for reserve retirement OR received REDUX Example: have 20 good years for reserve retirement
A collection of CRSC info is at LINK <—-

Note: The DFAS calculator has not been updated since 2014 and also has several flaws besides using incorrect VA compensation rates.

CRSC for Chapter 61 retirees with less than 20 years active duty is the lesser of
--Dollar amount of longevity portion of retired pay
or
--Dollar amount of the approved CRSC percentage. That amount is found in the VA compensation tables. Example: 100% CRSC approved for veteran with spouse and one child under 18--find that rate in VA comp tables.

Most CH 61 retiree CRSC cases I have seen over the past 8 years or so end up with the dollar amount of the longevity portion of retirement pay.
An increase in the DoD amount will not increase the CRSC for someone who is receiving the dollar amount of longevity portion of retired pay...that amount does not change with the increase of DoD pay. A decrease in the amount of DoD retired pay also does not change the dollar amount of the longevity portion of retired pay.

There are many possible scenarios.

Thanks so much for doing these calculations! I think I got it but would appreciate your help. I was at 70% DOD TDRL for 3 years and just got 50% PDRL My current crsc is 1118, but it should go up I believe.
1. 6570
2. 13 yrs and 8 mos
3. DOD = 50%
4. VA = 100% 3609 spouse and 1 college student and 1 smc-k comp.
5. CRSC 90%

Another quirk with CRSC computations is that the combination of CRSC plus residual (not waived) retired pay cannot exceed the dollar amount of the longevity portion of retired pay.

A. 6570 x 50% = 3285 retired pay ...all waived due to VA comp @ 3609
B. 13.667 x 2.5% = 34.17% multiplier
C. 6570 x 34.17 = 2244.97 dollar amount of longevity portion of retired pay
D. CRSC 90% spouse and 1 college student and 1 smc-k comp.= ~$2,098.62 + 106 = about 2204.62 (I receive K too and think it is 106..close in any case)
E. 2204.62 is the lesser, therefore the CRSC is the dollar amount of the approved percentage

Speculation: I suspect that at 70% you had residual retired pay. The combination of CRSC for CH 61 retirees with <20 yrs AD + residual retired pay cannot exceed the dollar amount of the longevity portion of retired pay.

Thank you! Glad to see your numbers were similar to what I had reached. Yes, at 70% I had about 1200 in residual.I was a bit disappointed to see no change in my CRSC and my DOD pay disappear in this months pay. I know I'll get the back pay. I just hope they won't wait too long. I called and reached someone after a 90 minute hold who said it looked like I filed an update on the 24th. I did not, but I am hoping it was the DOD pay update from DFAS or DOD. Other than that she offered no help and had no idea what I was asking about.

Need some help here.
I just received my CRSC rating of 70%
15 years 7 months AD service and was Med Ret on 28 Nov 2017
100% VA and 90% DOD
I am currently getting $3,630.36 from the VA and $0 form DOD

Thanks in advance to anyone who can help me with this.
